Let me introduce my neighbours, Mr and Mrs Brown. They live in a semi-detached house in the south of England. They own their house which is situated in the suburbs of a large town. There are three bedrooms in the house. The Browns have two children and a pet. The family drives a two-year-old Ford Cortina.
The head of the family, John Brown, is thirty-five. He is a good-looking man, six foot tall, well-built, fair-haired and blue-eyed. He is quiet and thoughtful. Mr Brown works in the office of an engineering company for 40 hours a week and earns ₤200 per week. He starts at 9.00 in the morning and finishes at 5.30 in the evening. He goes to work by car, which takes him 20 minutes. He doesn’t particularly like his job but there are chances of promotion.
His wife is four years younger. She is tall and slim with wavy brown hair and soft dark-brown eyes. She is kind and gentle. She works in a service industry for three days a week and earns ₤95. She works locally and goes there by bus. She quite likes her work as it gets her out of the house, she meets people and it is close to the children’s school.
Their son Michael is eleven. He is rather tall for his age and he looks like his mother. He is a clever boy and is good at nearly all subjects at school. In fact, he is one of the best pupils in his class.
His sister Margaret is only six. She is a lovely little girl with golden hair and dark blue eyes and a spirit that is always bright and happy, full of joy and gaiety. She isn’t fond of study of any kind but she loves music and she dances very prettily.
The children go to a state school which is a few minutes from home. A special bus comes to pick them up every day. They are at school from 9.00 to 3.00.
The most popular evening entertainment of the Browns is watching television or video, which they usually do for two and a half hours a day. Two evenings a week Mr Brown meets friends for a drink in the local pub. Mrs Brown’s hobby is gardening and most weekends she puts on a pair of old blue jeans and potters in their small garden. The most popular sports are fishing, football and tennis.

1. Universities in Britain are a magnet for students all over the world. There’re currently over 250,000 from outside Britain studying at British universities. The British government expects the total number of overseas students to be around 900,000 by 2020. But why is the UK such a popular destination for university students? The British Council offers a free and impartial service to anyone who is interested in studying in the UK, and an organization called UCAS assists you in finding a course and making an effective application. The UK is a dynamic and cosmopolitan place. The countryside is beautiful, and the theatres, museums, architecture and rich history make it a fascinating place to live and study. Why not give it a go?

BRITAIN’S NATURE
1. With its mild climate and different ground Britain has various vegetation. When the islands were first settled oak trees covered the greater part of the lowland, giving place to pine forests on higher ground. In the course of the centuries that followed nearly all the forests were cut especially by the Anglo-Saxons to make more place for farming. Now only seven per cent of the territory is in the forest. The greater number of trees is in the north and east of Scotland, in some parts of south-east England and in Wales. The most often the following trees are met: oak and in Scotland pine and birch.
2. Typical of Britain is hilly moorland country. The moorlands and heath lands occupy about a fourth of the total area of the UK. They consist of the possibly true Arctic Alpine vegetation of some mountain summits in Scotland and the much more extensive peat moss, heather, bilberry and grass moss of the Highland zone. Similar vegetation exists on high ground in eastern Northern Ireland. In the Lowland zone, where light sandy soils are found, the vegetation is dominated typically by the common heather and sometimes by bilberry or bell heather. A strip of land immediately bordering the coastline has also largely escaped the attention of humans and domesticated animals so that patches of maritime vegetation can frequently be found in approximately their natural state.
3. The animals of the British Isles look like those of north-western Europe, though there are fewer kinds. The survival of the wild mammals, amphibians and reptiles of the UK depends on their ability to come to terms with the changing environment and to protect themselves from attacks by their enemies, the most dangerous being human. Most of the formerly abundant larger mammals – such as boars, reindeer and wolves – have become extinct, but red deer survive in the Scottish Highlands and in Exmoor forest.
4. The carnivores (badgers, otters, foxes, stoats and weasels) thrive in most rural areas; also widely distributed are the rodents (rats, squirrels, mice) and insectivores (hedgehogs, moles, shrews). Rabbits are spread and their numbers are increasing. Amphibians are represented by three species of newt and five species of frogs and toads, while reptiles consist of three species of snakes, of which only the adder is venomous, and three species of lizards.

HIERARCHY OF CLASSES
1. Oceans and continents exemplify the highest-order landforms. Landform elements are parts of a high-order landforms that can be further identified and systematically given a cohesive definition such as hill-tops, shoulders, saddles, etc. Landform elements also include seascape and oceanic waterbody interface features, such as the great ocean basins under the thin skin of water. Landforms do not include man-made features, such as canals, ports and many harbours; and geographic features, such as deserts, forests, grasslands and impact craters.
2. Some generic landform elements including pits, peaks, channels, ridges may be extracted from a digital elevation model using some automated techniques where the data has been gathered by modern satellites and stereoscopic aerial surveillance cameras. Until recently, compiling the data found in such data sets required time consuming and expensive techniques of many man-hours.
3. Elementary landforms (segments, facets, relief units) are the smallest homogeneous divisions of the land surface, at the given scale. These are areas with relatively homogeneous morphometric properties, bounded by lines of discontinuity. A plateau or a hill can be observed at various scales ranging from few hundred metres to hundred of kilometres. Hence, the spatial distribution of landforms is often scale-dependent as in the case for soils and geological strata.
4. A number of factors, ranging from plate tectonics to erosion and deposition, can generate and affect landforms. Biological factors can also influence landforms – for example, note the role of vegetation in the development of dune systems and salt marshes, and the work of corals and algae in the formation of coral reefs.

The RSPCA
Founded in 1824, the RSPCA is the world’s oldest animal welfare organization. We work to promote kindness and to prevent cruelty to animals within all lawful means throughout England and Wales. Every year we find new homes for about 80,000 animals, we treat over 200,000 sick animals ranging from hedgehogs to horses, and we investigate over 100,000 complaints of cruelty.
