In Days to Come

Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling is one of the outstanding British writers. He was born in 1865 in the family of an Englishman in India. He got his education in England but returned to India in 1882. There he spent 6 years working in colonial English press. There he published his first literary works. In 1890 he published his first novel “The Light that Failed”, which brought him fame. He was one of the most popular writers of his time. During his life he visited South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. “Plain Tales from the Plain Hills”, “Barrack Room Ballads”, “Naulakka” enjoyed great popularity.

In October 1902 his “Just so Stories for Little Children” were published. His fairy-tales from the book were rather unusual for the British literature of that period. The unusual effect of his tales is reached by the rhythm and the music of words. Those who were lucky to listen to Kipling reading his fairy-tales noted that they always sounded truthful. Besides, not only children but even adults were very fond of “Just so Stories”.

Together with “The Jungle Book” it enjoys great popularity. Every year the children in “Kipling Society” write continuation to his fairy-tales.

In 1907 Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize.

My dream

Everyone likes dreaming. Dream is a hope for better things. It helps us to overcome the difficulties of our daily routine. A dream depends on people, on their education, nationality, character and other things. People imagine they have a lot of money, own family, an expensive car. Other people imagine themselves to be presidents of different countries or whole planets, etc.

I’d like to tell you about the house of my dream. I’d like to have my own house on the bank of a beautiful river with crystal water, surrounded by high mountains, covered with green forest of evergreen trees.

I imagine my house to be a 2 storeyed building. Near the front side it has a facade with columns and steps up to the front door. There are also two balconies and a terrace in my house. The windows are in the shape of arches. Through them you can see a wonderful landscape. There are lots of fir trees and flowers around the house. And you can walk in the shade of these trees listening to the birds singing.

Behind the house there is a swimming bath, covered with glass. There are some plastic armchairs around the swimming bath. Our house looks peaceful and calm and the calmest room is my study. Next door to the study there is our library. It is a huge room with thousands books on history, astronomy, physics, science fictions, fantasy, poetry, etc. Someone might think that it is an antagonism, because everything we want to read we can receive via Internet, but I like real books, to handle them in my hands, to read them page by page.

We enjoy having greens and fresh vegetables on our dinner table during long winters. Our house is a beautiful place at any time of the year. In winter it’s warm and cozy, in summer there is so much to do outside.

Travel

People travel for different purpose. Some people travel on business, others travel to visit relatives and friends, but most people travel to see the world.

There are two ways of travelling: using one’s own means of transport and using public transport. One can travel by car, by plane, by ship, by train, by coach or on foot depending on what on prefers: comfort or speed.

My favorite way of travelling is by plane. To my mind this is the fastest and the most comfortable mean of travelling for the long distance. I always enjoy looking through the window while flying in the plane.

One can travel to different towns and cities of your native country and even abroad. If you decide to travel by plane you have to book tickets beforehand which can be done either online or in a travel agency. When travelling by plane, you have to be at the airport two hours before an international flight and one hour before a domestic flight. At the airport you will have to go through the passport control and security check, have your luggage checked and then wait until the plane is ready for take-off. Sometimes, however, the flight can be delayed, so you have to wait at the airport.

Travelling is always nice: it gives you an opportunity to see interesting places and meet new people. I like travelling a lot.
