ДЛЯ СТУДЕНТОВ III КУРСА ЗАОЧНОГО ОТДЕЛЕНИЯ

КОНТРОЛЬНАЯ РАБОТА №5

VARIANT 4

1. Read and translate the text:

DIGITAL PAINTING

He further argues about the convenience of digital painting: the hours spent preparing canvases, mixing paint, washing brushes, waiting for paint layers to dry, could be spent on the essential creative matters.

A painting, formerly unique and one of a kind, can now be reproduced by using digital print and then the digitized painting can be exhibited on a virtu a l web-gallery, opening

up a broader audience and market fo r the a rtis t. In his book

‘P a in tin g and th e Digital A d v e n tu re ’ James Faure-Walker

describes the immense possibilities of digital technology:

“This marvelous technology m ust change th e way we th in k

about painting. So much more becomes possible in the control

of colour, in the manipulation of forms, the incorporation of

photos, and so on...

The qu e stio n a rise s w h e th e r d ig ita l p a in tin g on c an vas

can be reg a rd ed as p a in tin g? Works by a r tis ts who

employed n o n -trad itio n a l tools, m a te ria ls and methods, are

still addressed as ‘p a in tin g s ’. If it is a p a in tin g when Jo h n

Hoyland splashes the p ain t on a canvas, P e te r Blake uses gloss

house p ainting, Roy Lichtenstein uses dots and Andy Warhol

uses stencils, then it can be argued th a t artwork ‘painted with

pixe ls’ using digital p rin t technology also can be considered a

‘p a in tin g ’. The Museum of Modern A rt would regard an in k jet

p rin t as a painting ‘in the same sense th a t a Warhol screenp

rin t on canvas is considered a painting.

Unlike its physical co u n te rp a rt the d ig ita l image can be

corrected, duplicated, stored, remastered in a d iffe ren t colour

scheme, a t a d iffe re n t scale, blended in with a photograph.

Year by year the quality of p rin ted o u tp u t improves and the

gap between ‘re a l’ colour, th a t is to say brushed on pigment,

and ‘v ir tu a l’ colour (which is also pigment on watercolour

paper or on canvas) narrows. So if th e question was simply can

th is technology simulate and perhaps eventually replace ‘t r a d

itio n a l’ p a in t media then the answer is a h e sitan t “yes.”
