Now work in groups. Design a set of rules for a typical oil or gas company in your country.

Think about the rules for: forms of address; working place; dress code; timekeeping; overtime; telephones and the Internet; parking; gifts; sickness; any other areas.

Study the information of the company culture at Racetrac Petroleum, Inc given by one of the clients and say what is wrong.

Race Trac corporate managers and office staff alike display and maintain a hostile and very negative attitude and work environment from their store cashiers right on up to the corporate offices in Atlanta.

I have been amazed to walk into a store only to hear managers and the assistant managers verbally degrading and humiliating fellow employees, shift managers and customers alike.

I was privy to one assistant manager in a Central Florida degrading an elderly black gentleman to the point the man looked at the young manager and told her in no uncertain terms that she made him feel as though he was being handled by a master on a slave farm again. Not a good thing... This same store the assistant manager cusses at fellow employees she does not like and calls them useless worthless pieces of crap in front of whoever is in the store at the time...

At this same store I witnessed the store manager and a man having an all out fight about buying a car and with yelling, screaming, and threats. I am so amazed that RaceTrac allows this from their employees.

It seems as though RaceTrac owners and board members do not care what’s happening in their store.

WRITING

What is a memo?

The word memorandum is derived from the Middle English word 'memorandus' meaning 'to be remembered'.

A memo or memorandum is a type of communication commonly used in businesses. Memo's are sent to colleagues and co-workers. They differ from letters as they are more informal and do not require a salutation or a closure statement as in Business Letter.

A memo is:

• a hard-copy (sent on paper) document

• used for communicating inside an organisation

• usually short

• contains To, From, Date, Subject Headings and Message sections

• does not need to be signed, but sometimes has the sender's name at the bottom to be more friendly, or the sender's full name to be more formal. If in doubt, follow your company style.

Purpose of a Memo

A memo is used as a written reminder or to convey a short proposal or some basic information. Memos are useful in situations where e-mails or text messages are not suitable. For example, if you are sending an object, such as a book or a paper that needs to be signed, through internal office mail, you can use a memo as a covering note to explain what the receiver should do. A memo format is generally short consisting of between one and four sentences. A longer format might consist of several paragraphs but should never exceed one page in length. If the information you need to communicate exceeds one page it is better to write a report. In these instances a simple memorandum can be used to introduce a report which would be attached to the memo.
