Ex. 3. What is the fact behind the following wishes?

Выделение членов предложения

(Emphatic Structures)

Если на какой-то член предложения (кроме сказуемого) хотят обратить особое внимание, то его употребляют в следующей конструкции:

It is (was) + выделяемое слово + who/whom, that …

Для передачи смысла выделенного слова при переводе на русский язык вводятся дополнительные слова: именно; никто иной, как; ничто иное, как; это.

It was Popov who invented the radio. – Именно Попов изобрел радио.

Для выделения сказуемого перед глаголом (без частицы to) употребляются вспомогательные глаголы do/does в Present Indefinite и did в Past Indefinite. При переводе на русский язык добавляются слова: в самом деле; действительно.

You do look nice! – Ты действительно выглядишь великолепно!

 

 

Ex. 1. Translate into Russian.

1. It was Jane and Bill who told me the news. 2. It was in New York that I first met Mrs. Knott. 3. It is Mrs. Knott whom I met in New York. 4. It was yesterday that he was told about it. 5. Ex. 2. Translate into English.
