Что такое эффект Баскервиля?




 

Этот термин обозначает феномен смертельного испуга. В рассказе сэра Артура Конан Дойла «Собака Баскервилей» о легендарном Шерлоке Холмсе сэр Чарлз Баскервиль умирает от сердечного приступа, вызванного сильным психологическим стрессом. По мнению американского социолога, доктора Дэвида Филипса, люди действительно могут пугаться до смерти. Доктор Филипс считает, что существует очевидная связь между мощным психологическим стрессом и смертельным сердечным приступом. Он говорит: «Я помню, что в „Собаке Баскервилей“ сэр Чарлз Баскервиль умирает в результате смертельного сердечного приступа, явно вызванного страхом смерти при виде собаки. Поскольку Артур Конан Дойл был врачом, а не только писателем, то интересно, основывался его рассказ на медицинской интуиции или на литературном вымысле, то есть действительно существует связь между стрессом и сердечным приступом или же нет?»

Хотя многочисленные лабораторные исследования показали, что за стрессом следуют сердечнососудистые изменения, по понятным этическим причинам пациентов в ходе исследований все же не пугали до смерти. На основании умеренных стрессов нельзя определить, действительно ли после мощного потрясения следует смертельный сердечный приступ. По словам доктора Филипса, «трудно было найти способ проверки этих гипотез в силу этических проблем, связанных с лабораторными тестами. Наверное, лучшим решением было бы проведение экспериментов в естественных условиях, то есть в реальной жизненной обстановке, соответствующей определенным критериям. Во-первых, события реальной жизни на одних людей оказывают психологическое воздействие, а на других нет. Кроме того, это не должно быть смертельно опасное событие, оно должно лишь восприниматься как таковое».

Доктор Филипс нашел такое событие. Этот стрессовый фактор был связан с китайским и японским суеверием. На кантонском диалекте китайского языка и на японском языке слова «смерть» и «четыре» звучат почти одинаково. В результате число «4» вызывает неприятные ощущения и мрачные предчувствия у многих китайцев и японцев. Поэтому цифра «4» отсутствует на табличках с названиями некоторых китайских и японских улиц, на этажах и в гостиничных номерах, в меню ресторанов и в номерах телефонов. Кроме того, в обозначениях самолетов ВВС Китая также отсутствует цифра «4» из-за ассоциации со смертью.

Доктор Филипс обнаружил, что у американцев китайского и японского происхождения пик смертей от сердечных заболеваний приходится на четвертый месяц года, чего не наблюдается среди американцев европейского происхождения. Доктор Филипс изучил свидетельства о смерти более 200 тыс. американцев китайского и японского происхождения и 47 млн белых американцев за период с 1973 по 1998 г. Он говорит следующее: «Конан Дойл предполагает, что сэр Чарлз Баскервиль был особенно подвержен сердечным приступам, вызванным стрессами, поскольку страдал хроническим заболеванием сердца. Если Дойла не подвела медицинская интуиция, то пик смертей от хронических сердечных заболеваний среди американцев китайского и японского происхождения должен был приходиться на четвертое число. Суеверный страх сэра Чарлза Баскервиля перед местью в образе жуткой собаки разделяли и усиливали его соседи. Аналогичным образом китайские и японские суеверные страхи, вероятно, еще сильнее, когда они усилены окружающим населением».

Доказательства, представленные доктором Филипсом, подтверждают оба этих предположения. У американцев китайского и японского происхождения на 13 % больше смертей от сердечных заболеваний приходится на четвертый месяц. А в Калифорнии, где сосредоточено китайское и японское население, на 27 % больше смертей от сердечных заболеваний приходится на четвертое число. Доктор Филипс изучил 9 альтернативных, не психосоматических объяснений обнаруженных им фактов, включая возможность того, что четвертого числа китайцы и японцы меняют диету, пьют больше алкоголя, отказываются от лекарств или сами перенапрягают себя. И он пришел к выводу, что данные исследований предполагают наличие связи между психологическим стрессом и сердечными приступами42.

 

Ежегодно в Австралии умирают три человека, когда проверяют работоспособность 9-вольтовой батарейки, дотрагиваясь языком до ее контактов43.

 

 

В 1998 г. 142 австралийца поранились, потому что не вынули все булавки из новых рубашек43.

 

 

Ежегодно 58 австралийцев получают травмы, используя вместо отверток острые ножи43.

 

 

За период в 1993 по 2000 г. 31 австралиец умер оттого, что полил водой рождественскую елку, когда иллюминация на ней была включена43.

 

 

За три года до 2000 г. 19 австралийцев умерли оттого, что съели елочные украшения, посчитав их шоколадными43.

 

 

Австралийские больницы сообщили в 1999 г. о четырех случаях переломов рук, произошедших во время запуска петард43.

В 1997 г. у 8 австралийцев обнаружили трещины черепа, полученные в результате потери сознания во время рвоты в туалете43.

 

 

Бурый жир хорошо горит. Предположительно, у людей, прибегавших к добровольному самосожжению, был необычайно высокий уровень бурого жира в организме. Поэтому люди буквально воспламенялись.

 

 

Вероятность быть убитым обломками из космоса составляет 1:5 млрд.

 

 

Вероятность быть убитым собакой составляет 1:700 тыс.

 

 

Вероятность погибнуть в результате падения с кровати составляет 1:2 млн.

 

 

Если бы сегодня у нас был такой же уровень смертности, как в 1900 г., то половина людей, живущих сейчас, были бы мертвы.
