The Faculty I Study at and My Future Specialty

In October 1979 a new faculty “Pedagogy and Methods of Primary Education” was opened on basis of Industrial Pedagogical School of Volgograd State Pedagogical Institute.

In December 1989, the democratic elections of Dean were held. Doctor of Science, a professor of Pedagogy and Psychology of Primary Education Department Svetlana Yarikova was elected as the first dean of the new faculty. Several departments had been established there: Pedagogy of Pre-school Education, Pedagogy of Primary Education, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, The Russian Language and Methods of its Teaching at Primary School.

In 1989 the faculty of Pedagogy and Methods of Primary Education introduced some additional educational programs for Social Pedagogy, Psychology, Foreign Languages and Musical Education. On basis of these additional specializations new specialties were opened. They were Speech Therapy and Pedagogy and Psychology.

By 2004 the faculty had already had two large branches: a part-time department where studied 1.200 students and a full-time department where studied 1.050 students. There were also opened seven departments of training in eight specialties of the full-time branch and nine specialties of the part-time branch.

In September 2004 the Faculty of Pedagogy and Methods of Primary Education and Pre-school Education was transformed into the Institute of Pre-school, Primary Education and Special Pedagogy with two departments: the Faculty of Pre-school and Primary Education and the Faculty of Social and Correctional Pedagogy.

Now there are a lot of different programs of education at the Faculty of Pre-school and Primary Education:

· Pedagogy of Pre-school Education;

· Pedagogy and Psychology of Primary Education;

· Information Technology and Methods of Teaching Computing Science;

· Russian Language and Methods of Teaching it at Primary School;

· Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

There are a lot of different programs of education at the Faculty of Social and Correctional Pedagogy:

· Speech Therapy;

· Oligophrenia Pedagogy;

· Pre-school Psychology;

· Pre-school Pedagogy and Psychology with the additional specialty;

· Social Pedagogy;

· Pedagogy and Methods of Primary Education with the additional specialty “Information Technology”;

· Pedagogy and Psychology;

· Primary Education;

· Social Pedagogy and Children's Practical Psychology;

· Psychological Support of Training for Children with Intellectual Problems;

· Training Technologies of Pre-school Education.

As for me I am a first year student of an extra-mural department of Volgograd State Social Pedagogical University at the Faculty of Social and Correctional Pedagogy. I’m a future pedagogue-psychologist. The main goal of a pedagogue-psychologist is to help children with intellectual problems and children with health problems, and those who have difficulties in their studies. Such pupils are provided with a psychological support of the specialist who includes his work to all spheres of an educational process. A pedagogue-psychologist helps students in a form of lessons and advising. He also co-operates with parents, teachers and school administration and gives them recommendations. Such a specialist follows the aims:

- to find out what difficulties the child has in his studies,

- to make individual complex programs of child’s development,

- to carry out individual and group classes,

- to consult teachers and parents in case of development, bringing-up and education of children with mental problems,

- and to decide what methods have the most effective results during correctional study.

The main forms of correctional work with children are group and individual classes. Each group consists of children who have the same disorder. A number of pupils differs due to the degree of disorder, usually from four to six pupils. The classes are carried out as out-of-class activities. A length of the lessons depends on a character of disorder. A pedagogue-psychologist use different forms of work: audio and visual aids, tests, games, drawing, listening to music, singing and many others. The specialist varies exercises due to the degree and character of his or her pupils’ problems.

In the future I will graduate from my university and become such a specialist. I suppose this job is one of the most honorable and important in our society. I hope I will help children and their parents to adapt in our society.

“Shmily”

My grandparents were married for over half a century, and played their own special game from the time they had met each other. The goal of their game was to write the word “Shmily” in a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving “Shmily” around the house, and as soon as one of them discovered it, it was their turn to hide it once more.

They dragged “Shmily” with their fingers through the sugar and flour containers to wait whoever was preparing the next meal. They smeared it in the dew on the windows overlooking the patio where my grandma always fed us warm, homemade pudding with blue food coloring. “Shmily” was written in the steam left on the mirror after a hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath. At one point, my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper to leave Shmily on the very last sheet. There was no end to the places “Shmily” would pop up. Little notes with “Shmily” scribbled hurriedly were found on dashboards and car seats, or taped to steering wheels. The notes were stuffed inside shoes and left under pillows. “Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel and traced in the ashes of the fireplace. This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’ house as the furniture.

It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate my grandparents’ game. Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love- one that is pure and enduring. However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship. They had love down pat. It was more than their flirtatious little games; it was way of life. Their relationship was based on a devotion and passionate affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience.

But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ life: my grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step of the way. He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that color so she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when she was too sick to go outside.

Now the cancer was once again attacking her body. With the help of a cane and my grandfather’s steady hand, they still went to church every morning. But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she could not leave the house anymore. For a while, Grandpa would go to church alone, praying to God to watch over his wife. Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma was gone. “Shmily” was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of my grandmother’s funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members came forward and gathered around Grandma one last time. Grandpa stepped up to my grandmother’s casket and, taking a shaky breath, he began to sing to her. Though his tears and grief, the song came, a deep and throaty lullaby.

Shaking with my own sorrow, I will never forget that moment. For I knew then that, although I couldn’t begin to fathom the depth of their love, I had been privileged to witness its unmatched beauty. “S-H-M-I-L-Y”: “See How Much I Love You”…
