announce the beginning of
INTERNATIONAL CONTEST OF ESSAYS FOR STUDENTS
AND CADETS
‘MISSION AND AIMS OF PENAL SYSTEM IN THE MODERN WORLD’
The participation is free of charge. To participatein the Contest maynot only students and cadets, but all the people who are not indifferent to the problems of Penal System. The number of essays from each participant is not limited. The essays are to be written either in English or in Russian.
The Contest is open and the number of participants is not restricted.
The winners of the Contest will be determined by the jury. The most active participants (both individual authors and educational institutions) will be rewarded. The winners, the most active participants and educational institutions whose students were most active will receive the diplomas of winners and certificates of participation and their essays will be published.
The main aims of the Contest
· toactivate the youth’s interest to the Russian and the English languages;
· to activate social activity of citizens;
· to create bank of ideas and effective techniques that help to involve citizens into social and civil life;
· to promote international experience in the sphere of human rights application.
Contest Organizers
The Contest of essays ‘Mission and Aims of Penal System in the Modern World’ is organized and held by Perm Institute of the Federal Penal Service and Centre of Civil Education and Human Rights.
The Contest organizers form and approve:
· subject matter of essays;
· time-frame and the procedure;
· nominations of the Contest;
· composition of a group of experts;
· composition of the jury.
Procedure of the Contest
The participants send their authentic essays on the topic they have chosen to E-mail nauka-perm@yandex.ru with the word ‘Essay’ in the field ‘Subject’ till November, 26, 2012. The organizers will send their confirmation of the acceptance of an essay which will be the prove of the further participation in the Contest. The participants of the Contest automatically agree that their essays will be published.
The Conditions of Essay Acceptance
Essays sent to the Contest must conform to the following criteria:
· An essay must be an authentic work prepared by the participant of the Contest especially for this Contest and on the subject matter declared by the contestant.
· An essay must conform to the theme of the Contest and to the genre of an essay. Theworkmustrepresent picturesque account of personal impressions and views supported by telling arguments. Synopses, scientific works, poems, reports and works of other genres are not accepted.
· Authorship. Plagiarism of any kind will lead to withdrawal of the work from the Contest.
· Grammatical correctness. Essays with grammatical and syntactic mistakes in abundance will be withdrawn from the Contest.
· Political correctness. Essays with signs of extremism and any other contents that contradicts the laws are not accepted.
· The volume of work is from 1 to 3 pages of text typed.
Drawing-up of Essays
MS Office Word,.dос, TimesNewRoman, type size14, Page Setup – А4, margins – 20 mm; paragraph indent – 1,25cm, line spacing – 1,5 cm.
The file with the text must have the following structure:
· 1st line – surname, name, (patronymic) of the participant;
· 2nd line – post, place of work / study, city / settlement, city;
· 3rd line – title of the essay in Russian and in English;
· 4th line and the following – text of the essay.
Time-frame
Essays for the Contest are accepted no later than November 26, 2012. The works sent afterNovember 26, 2012are not accepted.
Essay Evaluation and Results of the Contest
Finalists of the Contest are determined by the group of independent expertswho evaluate participant’s Essays.
Essays are evaluated according to the following criteria:
- contents;
- ability to organize and verbalize thoughts;
- language skills and conformity of language to the genre;
- independence of thoughts;
- consistency;
- persuasiveness of arguments;
- literacy;
- figurative language;
- accuracy of word-use;
- expressiveness;
- style;
- correctness of wording;
- logical and compositional structure;
- validity;
- figurativeness;
- emotivity;
- originality of view on the topic.
Winners
Essays of finalists of the Contest will be evaluated by the independent jury that consists of experts approved by the Organizers of the Contest.
The names of winners will be known after summing-up the results of the Contest. Essays received from the contestants by the Organizers are not reviewed or returned to the authors. Appeals on the results of the Contest are not heard.
Essays of the winners will be published. All the participants will receive the certificates of participation. The winners of the Contest are awarded with diplomas and souvenirs.
