voracious [vq'reISqs], squad [skwOd], discovery [dI'skAvrI]
Shortly after Murilo left the dungeon where Conan the Cimmerian was confined, Athicus brought the prisoner a platter of food which included, among other things, a huge joint of beef and a tankard of ale. Conan fell to voraciously, and Athicus made a final round of the cells, to see that all was in order, and that none should witness the pretended prison break. It was while he was so occupied that a squad of guardsmen marched into the prison and placed him under arrest. Murilo had been mistaken when he assumed this arrest denoted discovery of Conan's planned escape. It was another matter; Athicus had become careless in his dealings with the underworld, and one of his past sins had caught up with him.
Another jailer took his place (его место занял другой тюремщик; to take — брать; занимать), a stolid, dependable creature whom no amount of bribery could have shaken from his duty (невозмутимый, заслуживающий доверия человек, чувство долга которого не смогла бы поколебать никакая сумма взятки; creature — создание, человек; amount — количество; сумма; to shake — трясти; ослабить, поколебать; duty — почтение; долг, обязательство, чувство долга). He was unimaginative (он был лишен воображения), but he had an exalted idea of the importance of his job (но у него было возвышенное представление о важности его службы).
After Athicus had been marched away to be formally arraigned before a magistrate (после того как Атикуса увели для официального предъявления обвинения перед мировым судьей; to march — маршировать; уводить; to arraign — привлекать к суду; предъявлять обвинение), this jailer made the round of the cells as a matter of routine (этот надзиратель сделал обход камер для порядка: «в качестве рутины»; matter — вещество; вопрос, дело; routine — обычный порядок; общепринятая практика). As he passed that of Conan (когда он проходил мимо камеры Конана), his sense of propriety was shocked and outraged to see the prisoner free of his chains and in the act of gnawing the last shreds of meat from a huge beefbone (его чувство уместности/приличия было возмущено и оскорблено при виде арестанта, освобожденного от цепей и занятого обгладыванием последних кусочков мяса с огромной говяжьей кости; propriety — правильность, правомерность, уместность; пристойность; to be in the act of doing smth. — заниматься чем-л.).

exalt [Ig'zLlt], routine [rH'tJn], gnaw [nL]

After Athicus had been marched away to be formally arraigned before a magistrate, this jailer made the round of the cells as a matter of routine. As he passed that of Conan, his sense of propriety was shocked and outraged to see the prisoner free of his chains and in the act of gnawing the last shreds of meat from a huge beefbone.
The jailer was so upset that he made the mistake of entering the cell alone (тюремщик так огорчился, что допустил ошибку, войдя в камеру один; upset — расстроенный, огорченный; to make a mistake — сделать ошибку), without calling guards from the other parts of the prison (не позвав караульных из других частей тюрьмы). It was his first mistake in the line of duty, and his last (это была его первая ошибка в служебных обязанностях и последняя; line of duty — служебные обязанности). Conan brained him with the beef bone (Конан размозжил ему голову говяжьей костью), took his poniard and his keys, and made a leisurely departure (забрал его кинжал и ключи, и неторопливо удалился; to make one's departure — уходить; departure — отправление, уход). As Murilo had said (как говорил Мурило), only one guard was on duty there at night (лишь один караульный дежурил там ночью; to be on duty — дежурить; duty — долг, обязательство; служебные обязанности; дежурство). The Cimmerian passed himself outside the walls by means of the keys he had taken (киммериец выбрался сам за стены с помощью ключей, которые он забрал; by means of — посредством; means — средства) and presently emerged into the outer air (и вскоре вышел на открытый воздух /снаружи/; presently — лично; вскоре), as free as if Murilo's plan had been successful (такой же свободный, как если бы удался план Мурило; successful — успешный).

key [kJ], leisurely ['leZqlI], departure [dI'pRCq]
The jailer was so upset that he made the mistake of entering the cell alone, without calling guards from the other parts of the prison. It was his first mistake in the line of duty, and his last. Conan brained him with the beef bone, took his poniard and his keys, and made a leisurely departure. As Murilo had said, only one guard was on duty there at night. The Cimmerian passed himself outside the walls by means of the keys he had taken and presently emerged into the outer air, as free as if Murilo's plan had been successful.
In the shadows of the prison walls, Conan paused to decide his next course of action (в тени тюремных стен Конан остановился, чтобы принять решение о следующем ходе действий; course of action — образ действия). It occurred to him that since he had escaped through his own actions (ему пришло в голову, что поскольку он совершил побег благодаря собственным действиям; to occur to — приходить на ум), he owed nothing to Murilo (он ничем не обязан Мурило); yet it had been the young nobleman who had removed his chains and had the food sent to him (однако именно молодой дворянин снял его цепи и велел прислать ему еду; to send — посылать), without either of which his escape would have been impossible (без того и другого его побег был бы невозможен; either — тот или другой; и тот и другой). Conan decided that he was indebted to Murilo (Конан решил, что он в долгу перед Мурило) and, since he was a man who discharged his obligations eventually (а так как он был человеком, который в конечном счете возвращал долги; to discharge — разгружать; выплачивать /долги/; eventually — в конечном счете, в конце концов; со временем), he determined to carry out his promise to the young aristocrat (он принял решение выполнить свое обещание молодому аристократу; to determine — определять; выносить решение; to carry out — выполнять). But first he had some business of his own to attend to (но прежде всего ему нужно было позаботиться о кое-каких своих делах; first — ранее, сначала; прежде всего; to attend to — заботиться /о чем-л./).

In the shadows of the prison walls, Conan paused to decide his next course of action. It occurred to him that since he had escaped through his own actions, he owed nothing to Murilo; yet it had been the young nobleman who had removed his chains and had the food sent to him, without either of which his escape would have been impossible. Conan decided that he was indebted to Murilo and, since he was a man who discharged his obligations eventually, he determined to carry out his promise to the young aristocrat. But first he had some business of his own to attend to.
He discarded his ragged tunic and moved off through the night naked but for a loincloth (он избавился от истрепанной туники и тронулся сквозь ночь обнаженным, за исключением набедренной повязки; to discard — сбрасывать карту; избавляться от чего-л.; to move off — трогаться). As he went he fingered the poniard he had captured (когда он шел = на ходу он ощупывал кинжал, которым он завладел; to capture — захватывать; завладеть) — a murderous weapon with a broad, double-edged blade nineteen inches long (смертельное оружие с широким обоюдоострым лезвием длиной в девятнадцать дюймов[15]). He slunk along alleys and shadowed plazas (он крался по узким улочкам и затененным площадям; to slink — красться) until he came to the district which was his destination — the Maze (пока не дошел до района, который был его целью — Лабиринта). Along its labyrinthian ways he went with the certainty of familiarity (по запутанным дорожкам он шел с уверенностью знания = с уверенностью знающего человека; familiarity — близкое общение; знание, ознакомленность, осведомленность). It was indeed a maze of black alleys and enclosed courts and devious ways (это действительно был лабиринт темных улочек, замкнутых дворов и окольных путей; black — черный; мрачный); of furtive sounds, and stenches (скрытых звуков и зловония). There was no paving on the streets (на улицах не было дорожного покрытия = улицы не были мощенными; paving — мощение улиц; мостовая, дорожное покрытие); mud and filth mingled in an unsavory mess (грязь и отбросы смешались в отвратительное месиво; unsavory — безвкусный; отвратительный; mess — беспорядок; месиво). Sewers were unknown (сточных труб не знали); refuse was dumped into the alleys to form reeking heaps and puddles (отходы вываливали на узкие улочки, и из них получались зловонные кучи и лужи; to form — придавать форму; возникать, создаваться, образовываться). Unless a man walked with care he was likely to lose his footing and plunge waist-deep into nauseous pools (если человек шел, не соблюдая осторожность, он мог потерять опору под ногой = оступиться и погрузиться по пояс в тошнотворные лужи; unless — если не; with care — осторожно; likely — вероятный, возможный; footing — опора для ноги to lose one's footing — поскользнуться, оступиться; to plunge — нырять; окунаться; погружаться). Nor was it uncommon to stumble over a corpse (обычным /делом/ было и споткнуться о труп) lying with its throat cut or its head knocked in, in the mud (лежащий с перерезанным горлом или проломленной головой в грязи; to cut — резать; to knock in — проломить). Honest folk shunned the Maze with good reason (честные люди избегали Лабиринта по убедительным причинам; good reasons — убедительные причины).

Conan reached his destination without being seen (Конан добрался до своей цели никем не замеченный; destination — назначение; цель), just as one he wished fervently to meet was leaving it (как раз когда человек, которого он страстно желал встретить, выходил оттуда). As the Cimmerian slunk into the courtyard below (когда киммериец прокрался во /внутренний/ двор внизу; to slink — красться), the girl who had sold him to the police (девица, которая продала его полиции; to sell — продавать) was taking leave of her new lover in a chamber one flight up (прощалась со своим новым любовником в спальне на один лестничный пролет выше; to take leave of — прощаться с). This young thug, her door closed behind him (этот молодой головорез, когда ее дверь закрылась за ним), groped his way down a creaking flight of stairs, intent on his own meditations (стал наощупь спускаться по скрипучему лестничному пролету, погруженный в свои раздумья; to grope one’s way — пробираться на ощупь; intent — полный решимости; погруженный, поглощенный), which, like those of most of the denizens of the Maze, had to do with the unlawful acquirement of property (которые, как и те = мысли большинства обитателей Лабиринта касались незаконного присвоения собственности; to have to do with — иметь дело с чем-л., касаться чего-л., иметь отношение к чему-л.). Part-way down the stairs, he halted suddenly (на полпути вниз по лестнице он вдруг остановился; partway — на полпути), his hair standing up (/и/ у него встали /дыбом/ волосы; to stand up — встать; подняться). A vague bulk crouched in the darkness before him (неясное тело пригнулось в темноте перед ним; bulk — груда; тело), a pair of eyes blazed like the eyes of a hunting beast (пара глаз пылала, как глаза охотящегося = хищного зверя). A beastlike snarl was the last thing he heard in life (звериное рычание было последним: «последней вещью», что он услышал в жизни; to hear — слышать), as the monster lurched against him and a keen blade ripped through his belly (когда чудовище накренилось к нему, и острое лезвие распороло его брюхо). He gave one gasping cry and slumped down limply on the stairway (он издал один задыхающийся крик и безвольно осел на лестницу).
flight [flaIt], acquirement [q'kwaIqmqnt], vague [veIg]

The barbarian loomed above him for an instant, ghoul-like (варвар на мгновение навис над ним, как упырь; to loom — маячить; нависать), his eyes burning in the gloom (а его глаза горели во мраке). He knew the sound was heard (он знал, что звук услышан), but the people in the Maze were careful to attend to their own business (но люди в Лабиринте были осторожны, чтобы заниматься = и занимались своими собственными делами = и не лезли в чужие дела; to attend to one's own business — заботиться о собственных делах). A death cry on darkened stairs was nothing unusual (смертельный крик на темной лестнице не был чем-то необычным). Later, some one would venture to investigate (позднее кто-нибудь отважится расследовать = выяснить причину; to investigate — расследовать; собирать сведения), but only after a reasonable lapse of time (но лишь спустя разумный промежуток времени).
Conan went up the stairs and halted at a door he knew well of old (Конан поднялся по лестнице и остановился у двери, которая ему была хорошо знакома в прежнее время; of old — прежде, в прежнее время). It was fastened within (она была заперта изнутри; to fasten — прикреплять; запирать /на защелку, засов/), but his blade passed between the door and the jamb and lifted the bar (но его лезвие прошло между дверью и косяком и подняло щеколду; bar — брусок; засов, щеколда). He stepped inside, closing the door after him (он шагнул вовнутрь, закрывая за собой дверь), and faced the girl who had betrayed him to the police (и оказался лицом к лицу с девицей, которая выдала его полиции; to face — стоять лицом к лицу, встречаться).

The wench was sitting cross-legged in her shift on her unkempt bed (девка сидела в сорочке, поджав ноги, на неприбранной кровати; wench — девица; девка, проститутка; cross-legged — сидящий по-турецки, положив ногу на ногу или поджав ноги; unkempt — растрепанный; неопрятный). She turned white and stared at him as if at a ghost (она побелела и вытаращилась на него, словно на привидение; to turn white — побелеть, побледнеть). She had heard the cry from the stairs (она услышала крик с лестницы), and she saw the red stain on the poniard in his hand (и увидела кровавое пятно на кинжале в его руке; red — красный; окровавленный). But she was too filled with terror on her own account to waste any time lamenting the evident fate of her lover (но она была слишком наполнена = переполнена ужасом за себя, чтобы тратить даром время на причитания об очевидной судьбе своего возлюбленного; on one’s account — ради кого-л., из-за кого-л.). She began to beg for her life, almost incoherent with terror (она начала просить за свою жизнь, почти бессвязно от страха). Conan did not reply (Конан не отвечал); he merely stood and glared at her with his burning eyes (он лишь стоял и сердито уставился на нее горящими глазами), testing the edge of his poniard with a callused thumb (пробуя лезвие кинжала огрубевшим большим пальцем; callus — затвердение на коже; мозоль; бугорок; to callus — образовывать мозоль, затвердение).
ghost [gqust], account [q'kaunt], thumb [TAm]

At last he crossed the chamber (наконец, он прошел через комнату), while she cowered back against the wall, sobbing frantic pleas for mercy (в то время как она съежилась, /прижимаясь/ к стене, безумно рыдая и прося о помиловании; plea for mercy — прошение о снисхождении, помиловании). Grasping her yellow locks with no gentle hand (ухватив ее желтые локоны /отнюдь/ не нежной рукой), he dragged her off the bed (он стащил ее с кровати). Thrusting his blade in the sheath (запихнув клинок в ножны), he tucked his squirming captive under his left arm and strode to the window (он сунул извивающуюся пленницу под левую мышку и шагнул к окну; to stride — шагать /большими шагами/). As in most houses of that type, a ledge encircled each story (как в большинстве домов такого типа, каждый этаж окружал карниз; ledge — планка; выступ, карниз), caused by the continuance of the window ledges (вызванный = образованный непрерывными оконными карнизами; to cause — служить причиной; вызывать). Conan kicked the window open and stepped out on that narrow band (Конан распахнул окно ногой и вышел на эту узкую кромку; to kick — ударять ногой; to step out — выходить; band — тесьма; кромка). If any had been near or awake (если бы кто-нибудь оказался поблизости или проснулся), they would have witnessed the bizarre sight of a man moving carefully along the ledge (они = он бы стал свидетелем странного зрелища — мужчины, осторожно двигавшегося по карнизу; to witness — быть свидетелем; sight — зрение; зрелище), carrying a kicking, half-naked wench under his arm (и несущего под мышкой брыкающуюся, полураздетую потаскушку). They would have been no more puzzled than the girl (они = и свидетель был бы озадачен не меньше девицы).

Reaching the spot he sought (добравшись до того места, которое он искал; to reach — протягивать; добираться; to seek — искать), Conan halted, gripping the wall with his free hand (Конан остановился, ухватившись за стену свободной рукой). Inside the building rose a sudden clamor (внутри здания поднялся неожиданный ор; to rise — подниматься), showing that the body had at last been discovered (указывающий на то, что тело наконец обнаружено; to show — показывать; указывать). His captive whimpered and twisted, renewing her importunities (его пленница хныкала и изгибалась, возобновив свои настойчивые мольбы; importunity — назойливость; настойчивое домогательство). Conan glanced down into the muck and slime of the alleys below (Конан взглянул мельком вниз на дерьмо и слизь улочек внизу; slime — тина; слизь); he listened briefly to the clamor inside and the pleas of the wench (он коротко = ненадолго прислушался к крикам внутри и призывам девки); then he dropped her with great accuracy into a cesspool (затем он сбросил ее с удивительной меткостью в выгребную яму; great — большой; удивительный, великолепный, восхитительный). He enjoyed her kickings and flounderings and the concentrated venom of her profanity for a few seconds (он несколько секунд наслаждался ее брыканием и барахтаньем и концентрированным ядом ее брани), and even allowed himeself a low rumble of laughter (и даже позволил себе тихо хохотнуть; low — низкий; тихий; rumble — грохот; рокот; урчание). Then he lifted his head, listened to the growing tumult within the building (потом он поднял голову, прислушался к растущему шуму внутри здания), and decided it was time for him to kill Nabonidus (и решил, что пора ему убивать Набонидуса; it is time — пора).

It was a reverberating clang of metal that roused Murilo (Мурило пробудил раскатистый лязг металла). He groaned and struggled dazedly to a sitting position (он застонал и с трудом сел: «постарался в сидячее положение» в изумлении; to struggle — бороться; делать усилия; стараться изо всех сил). About him all was silence and darkness (вокруг него все было тишина и темнота = было тихо и темно), and for an instant he was sickened with the fear that he was blind (и на мгновение его шокировал страх, что он ослеп; to sicken — заболевать; чувствовать тошноту; испытывать отвращение; чувствовать себя плохо; шокировать). Then he remembered what had gone before (потом он вспомнил, что произошло до этого; to go — идти; происходить), and his flesh crawled (и у него по телу побежали мурашки; to crawl — ползать; ощущать мурашки по телу). By the sense of touch he found that he was lying on a floor of evenly joined stone slabs (с помощью /чувства/ осязания он пришел к выводу, что лежит на полу из ровно пригнанных каменных плит; to find — находить; приходить к заключению; to join — соединять; стыковать). Further groping discovered a wall of the same material (дальнейшее ощупывание обнаружило = потом на ощупь он обнаружил стену из того же материала; to grope — идти ощупью; нащупывать). He rose and leaned against it (он поднялся и оперся о нее; to rise; to lean — наклонять; опираться), trying in vain to orient himself (тщетно пытаясь сориентироваться). That he was in some sort of a prison seemed certain (казалось бесспорным, что он находится в какой-то тюрьме; some sort of — какой-то), but where and how long he was unable to guess (но он не мог догадаться где и как долго). He remembered dimly a clashing noise and wondered (он смутно помнил лязгающий грохот и гадал) if it had been the iron door of his dungeon closing on him (была ли это железная дверь его темницы, закрывавшейся за ним), or if it betokened the entrance of an executioner (или это означало вхождение палача; token — знак, символ).
material [mq'tIqrIql], prison [prIzn], executioner ["eksI'kjHSqnq]
It was a reverberating clang of metal that roused Murilo. He groaned and struggled dazedly to a sitting position. By the sense of touch he found that he was lying on a floor of evenly joined stone slabs. Further groping discovered a wall of the same material. He remembered dimly a clashing noise and wondered if it had been the iron door of his dungeon closing on him, or if it betokened the entrance of an executioner.
At this thought he shuddered profoundly and began to feel his way along the wall (при этой мысли он сильно содрогнулся и начал пробираться ощупью вдоль стены; profoundly — глубоко; сильно; to begin; to feel one’s way — пробираться ощупью). Momentarily he expected to encounter the limits of his prison (ежеминутно он ожидал наткнуться на границы темницы), but after a while he came to the conclusion that he was travelling down a corridor (но через некоторое время он пришел к выводу, что он движется по коридору; to travel — путешествовать; двигаться). He kept to the wall (он держался стены; to keep to — держаться, придерживаться чего-л.), fearful of pits of other traps (боясь ям и других ловушек), and was presently aware of something near him in the blackness (а некоторое время спустя ощутил что-то = чье-то присутствие рядом с собой в темноте). He could see nothing (он ничего не видел), but either his ears had caught a stealthy sound (но либо его слух уловил какой-то крадущийся звук; ear — ухо; слух; to catch — ловить; уловить; stealthy — незаметный, скрытый, тайный), or some subconscious sense warned him (либо какое-то подсознательное чувство предупредило его; to warn — предостерегать). He stopped short, his hair standing on end (он резко остановился, а его волосы встали дыбом; to stand on end — вставать дыбом); as surely as he lived, he felt the presence of some living creature crouching in the darkness in front of him (с той же уверенностью, что он жив = он давал голову на отсечение, что ощутил присутствие какого-то живого существа, пригнувшегося во тьме перед ним; as sure as I’m alive — наверняка; даю голову на отсечение; как пить дать; to feel — ощупывать; ощущать).
