THE ECONOMY OF THE REPUBLIC OF BELARUS
1. The Republic of Belarus is one of the most economically advanced regions in the CIS. Belarus has favorable geographic position, advanced network of transport communication, high scientific and technical potential. The Belarusian economy satisfies its needs by means of wide trade with many countries in the world.
2. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union the Republic's economy experienced a recession in production. But since 1996 this recession has stopped, and in 1996 the gross production increased by 2.6% in contrast with 1995.
3. Today Belarus is a developed industrial state. Industry makes up 70% of the Gross National Product. Belarus has succeeded in industrial development of such branches as motor industry, manufacture of tractors and agricultural engineering, machine tool industry, electronics, manufacture and refining of petroleum, mineral fertilizers, manufacture of construction materials, light industry, food-processing industry.
4. The Republic specializes in producing universal tractors and exports tractors with the trademark "Belarus" to more than 40 countries in the world: the Argentine, Bulgaria, Hungary, Vietnam, China, Latvia and other countries. The share of light industry comprises 7.7% of industrial production of Belarus. The leading place here belongs to textile, clothing and shoe industries. On the basis of flax cultivation the republic has developed flax and flax-processing industry. The largest flax-processing factory is in Orsha.
5. There are powerful facilities for producing computers, micro-electronic devices in Belarus. It produces watches, radio-receivers and TV sets, electric devices, devices for controlling and regulating technological processes.
6. The republic ranks first among the countries of the CIS in manufacturing tractors, lorries, chemical fibers, motorcycles and timber, potassium fertilizers.
7. The country is not rich in natural resources. The main resources here are oil, potash salt and peat. Agriculture of Belarus specializes in milk and meat production, flax, vegetables and apples.
