The political system of the UK

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. It means that the monarch is the head of state. The current monarch is Queen Elizabeth II. But the power of the monarch is not absolute. It is limited by Parliament.

The Houses of Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords is the upper house of Parliament. It consists of life peers and hereditary peers. The number of the members in the House of Lords is not fixed. Both the House of Lords and the House of Commons meet in the Palace of Westminster.

The House of Commons is the lower house of Parliament. It is an elected body consisting of 650 members. All the MPs are elected from constituencies every five years.

In order to become laws, the bills proposed by the Government must be adopted by both chambers. The House of Lords may review and amend all the bills excepting financial ones. The Lords can delay a bill for a maximum of one year. But they may not veto any bills. After adopting, all the bills must be approved by the Queen.

In addition to the Parliament of the UK, there are also three Parliaments, those of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The legislative power is exercised by Parliament. The executive power is exercised by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The monarch appoints as Prime Minister the leader of the party which is supported by a majority of MPs. The current Prime Minister is Boris Johnson, the leader of the Conservative Party. The Prime Minister selects the other senior ministers, who compose the Cabinet and are called secretaries of state.

In addition to the Government of the UK, there are also three governments, those of Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

There are two leading political parties in the UK. They are: the Conservative Party and the Labor Party. The second largest party becomes the Official Opposition with the Shadow Cabinet.

The judicial branch is independent of both the legislative and executive branches. The Supreme Court of the UK is the final appellate tribunal for all civil cases in the country and for all criminal cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There is no written constitution in Great Britain, only precedents, conventions and traditions.

The Queen of the UK is also the head of the British Commonwealth. However, the monarch of the UK does not have much real power. They say that the Queen reigns but she does not rule.
