A little bit of articles

1) On our journey to.....*....... France, we crossed.......the........ Atlantic Ocean.

Определенный артикль "the" не употребляется с названиями стран, но ставится перед океанами.

 

2) What did you eat for.....*........ lunch?

Breakfast, dinner, lunch, supper и др. употребляются преимущественно без артикля.

 

3) Randy plays....the......... violin, and Mark plays......*........ hockey at.......the...... Boy's Club near.......*........ Times Square.

Музыкальные инструменты - the, спортивные игры - без артикля, площади - без артикля. The Boy's Club - определенный клуб около площади Times Square.

 

4)........*....... Queen Elizabeth II is.....the......... monarch of........*....... Great Britain.

Титул/звание/профессия + имя/фамилия человека = нет артикля. The monarch of - единственный в своём роде, кроме того, затем следует фраза с предлогом "of".

 

5) Scientists are willing to send.....an......... expedition to.....*........ Venus during......the....... 2020s.

An expedition - употребляется впервые, неопределенная экспедиция. Название планет - без артикля. Двадцатые годы, пятидесятые годы и т. д. такого-то века говорим the 1950s (например).

 

6) Clara's mother is in.....*......... hospital, that's why she didn't come to........*....... work on Tuesday.

In/to hospital, in/to church etc - без артикля во всех подобных случаях, когда кто-то лежит в больнице, молится в церкви, т. е. "использует по назначению". Определенный артикль ставится, когда кто-то там работает, например, а не молится/лечится.

 

7).......*........ Florida State University is smaller than.......the...... University of Florida.

Запомните: если во фразе есть предлог "of", то обычно перед ней ставим артикль "the" (если не влияют другие правила постановки артикля).

 

8) Nick is....a......... doctor in......a....... small hospital in London, His wife works as.....a........ nurse in....the........ same hospital.

Обычно между глаголом "to be" и профессией ставится неопределенный артикль (если не влияют другие правила). A small hospital - описательное определение "small", поэтому ставим "a". The same - запомнить.

 

9) It was a tough voyage. We were at......*....... sea for six weeks and had.......a........ nice time.

At sea - запомнить. "Nice" - описательное определение.

 

10) - I'd like to have.....a........ piano at home. - Can you play......the........ piano?

Иметь пианино (предмет) - а piano, играть на музыкальных инструментах to play the....

 

11) Is there.......a....... church in.....*....... Brown Street?

Просто церковь, неопределенная, любая. Названия улиц - без артикля. НО: the Arbat, the Mall.

 

12) I would like to go to China. I want to try.......*...... Chinese food and to learn.......the...... Chinese language. I've heard that......the....... Chinese are very hospitable.

Перед неисчисляемыми существительными (food) артикль "a/an" не ставится. В данном случае мы говорим просто о китайской еде. а не о каком-то конкретном блюде, поэтому артикль не ставим. Запомните: English = the English language. The English - англичане, the Chinese - китайцы и т. п.

 

13).......The....... Andes are in.......*....... South America.

Горные цепи - с определенным артиклем. Континенты - без артикля.

 

14).......*....... Mount McKinley is in.......*....... Alaska.

Горные вершины употребляются без артикля (в отличие от горных цепей), штаты США - тоже без артикля.

 

15)......The....... National Gallery is to.......the........ north of......*......... London.

Галереи - с артиклем "the". Направления (к северу от, к югу от и т. п.) - также с артиклем "the". Города - нулевой артикль.

 

16)...*.......... KFC is a chain of fast food restaurants. Their fast service is......a....... means of attracting customers.

KFC - название, как Mcdonald's. Запомнить: "a means of" переводится средство, способ.

 

17) Where is....the.......... Sahara Desert?

Названия пустынь употребляются с определенным артиклем.

 

18) What is.....the......... capital of........*....... Italy?

Столица - одна единственная. Кроме того, есть предлог "of". Italy - страна, артикль не употребляется.

 

19) On their way home they noticed.....a.......... nasty car accident.......a........ yellow car ran straight into....a......... white lorry.

Во всех трёх случаях перед существительными стоят описательные определения.

 

20) Is......the........ Indian Ocean bigger than.....the........ Atlantic Ocean?

Реки, моря и океаны употребляются с артиклем "the".

Ask questions to the underlined words.

Put the sentences into the Passive Voice.
