Slang - an integral part of the English vocabulary, has recently been actively penetrating the book speech and the film industry - it is simply impossible not to notice it. A large part of slang is the use of energized, funny and expressive expressions and words instead of the usual. The modern world is developing dynamically and language is constantly developing along with it.

Actuality of the project:

This topic has become interesting to us, because now mostly everything goes through the Internet, as well as communication. Therefore, the English language is being updated and changed more and more. And we would like to learn more about how the English language is changing.

Our main aim:
Learn how social media is changing the English language.

Chapter 1.History of English slang.

Slang, being one of the integral parts of the English vocabulary, has recently vigorously penetrated into the book, everyday speech and into the film industry. In the modern world, language is constantly at a stage of development. Language is inseparable from culture, being the product and reflection of the culture of its carriers. Events that embrace humanity directly affect the development of colloquial speech, are reflected in various languages of the world and add more and more phrases and expressions to the vocabulary of modern society. Political elections, wars, or technological progress are all examples of constant changes in the modern world that influence the emergence of a new, more modern slang.

Slang permeates all circles of society. It originates in a certain group of people, but at the same time it spreads within the entire class of society. People who are not part of this class use this slang at times, thus causing its widespread use. Slang is firmly entrenched in the language and seems completely natural for each of the groups in society that use it.

In the Middle Ages, writers such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Caxton, and William Malmesbury identified territorial differences in pronunciation and dialects. This was the first definition of the concept of "slang". However, the modern meaning of the concept of "slang" did not appear earlier than the XVI-XVII centuries. At the end of the 16th century, the English Corner Jargon appeared. It was a new kind of speech used by criminals and crooks in drinking establishments and gambling houses. At first the English Criminal Jargon was considered overseas. So, many scientists assumed that he either originated in Romania, or had something to do with the French language.

To date, there is no consensus regarding the interpretation of the concept of "slang". It does not contain terminological precision, and different linguists mean different interpretations by it. Numerous dictionaries offer different interpretations of this concept.

Chapter 2. Classification of English slang

Cockney

"A true Cockney is someone born within the so und of Bow Bells" (St Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside, London).

Today, however, the term Cockney refers not only to those who were born in London, but to everyone who speaks with such an accent. Cockney is now less and less played in central London, more and more - in its suburbs, as well as throughout the southeast of England. It is very popular in Bedford and Essex counties.

Cockney is also called rhyming slang, when instead of one word is used, the one that rhymes with it. For example, the word "look" rhymes with "butcher's hook". In many cases, the rhyming word is dropped and no one says "butcher's hook", they just say "butcher's." However, the rhyming word is not always omitted, so Cockney constructions are very different and often depend only on the situation.

There is no reason to believe that Cockney evolved as a secret language. The British, like any other people, love to rhyme. Proof of this is the many reduplications in the English language. For example, 'hoity-toity'-resentful, higgledy-piggledy'-in a mess,' namby-pamby'-sentimental, 'nitty-gritty'-the smallest,' itsy-bitsy'-trivial, etc.

The slang of College students

The main reasons for the functioning of youth slang is that slang is a departure from the ordinary, a game, irony, a mask. Easy youth slang seeks to get away from the boring world of adults, parents, teachers. Therefore, a huge number of people, schoolchildren, students often use slang in their speech.

Youth slang is like its speakers. It is sharp, loud, impudent. Youth slang is the result of a peculiar desire to change the world in a different way. The language here, in its given function, reflects the inner aspirations of young people brighter, stronger than clothes, hairstyles, and lifestyle. Also, the desire of young people to differ from adults and to be like their own in the youth environment is an important reason for the functioning of slang in the everyday speech of young people. Slang makes speech more concise, emotionally expressive.

Although not everything in slang is acceptable, it noticeably adorns English speech with its liveliness, flexibility and unexpected wit. For many centuries of its existence, some slang words that came from the "lower classes" have penetrated and entrenched in the literary English.

English internet

Today we communicate a lot via the Internet, and therefore one should not be surprised at the appearance of a separate Internet dialect. This dialect is even simpler than the language of our everyday communication with you, and it uses many abbreviations (abbreviations of words and phrases).

And before diving into the world of Internet English, we would like to warn you about one of its small but noticeable features: Internet slang is full of swear words and insults, and some words are deliberately misspelled or misused. Many of the words that are so often and widely used in online communication will not be used in a face-to-face conversation. So remember: Internet English is for the Internet only!

English is constantly changing, albeit slowly. On the Internet, the process proceeds many times faster - the language there changes every day, when more and more expressions, images or videos become "viral" (in other words, when they quickly become hugely popular). Every day you have a chance to see a new word or picture that you have never seen before.
