1. Ответьте на вопросы о себе письменно

1. What kinds of weather do you like most of all?

2. Does the weather influence your health?

3. What weather conditions make you feel better?

4. When are you sleepy? Nervous? Energetic?

5. What kind of weather makes you feel happy?

Put the paragraphs in the right order.

1. Even this nervous energy gets the heart pumping faster! Energy levels are also directly affected by temperature. When people are hot, their blood vessels expand, their faces and chests blush a bright red as a biological cooling mechanism. When people are cold, their blood vessels do just the opposite, constricting to trap heat inside.

2. This built-in system keeps the human body from reaching dangerous levels of extreme temperatures. An inconvenient side effect of this automatic heating system is that with constricted movement of blood, circulation slows down considerably. This is whyit's so important to exercise regularly, to improve circulation and to get oxygen flowing.

3. For many years people have understood that sunlight, cloudiness, stormy conditions and falling barometric pressure can affect their health. When the barometric pressure drops, joints and old injuries ache. Knees and lower back areas become stiff and swollen. Lack of sunlight affects the production of serotonin, it influences our moods and sleep patterns.

4. The sun is a person's most important source of vitamin D. Without enough sunlight depression rates are increased, it often happens during the winter months. On the contrary, people becomecalmer in rainy days.Sleepy cloudy days andthe sound of rain on the rooftop cause relaxation. But storms excitesome people, fillingthem with adrenaline while they fill others with fear.

Is it true or false?

  1. The connection between weather conditions and health is not evident.
  2. When the barometric pressure drops people are full of energy.
  3. When it is not sunny we can feel sleepy.
  4. Some people are depressed in summer.
  5. When it rains we are nervous.
  6. We should sleep more to improve circulation.

Answer the questions.

  1. When are depression rates increased?
  2. When do people feel calmer?
  3. What expands when people are hot?
  4. What is the side effect of biological cooling system?

Do the tasks follow it Angry, Sad, Happy?-Blame the Weather! (Interview with an expert)

Q. Professor, how much impact does weather have on people's health and moods? A. We know that weather has an effect on certain diseases such as arthritis and heart disorders. Weather is also associated with emotional problems and disturbed behaviour. It is not by itself a direct cause of mental illness, but it can create an added stress on people on top of marital, job and other problems.

Q. What kinds of weather have the greatest effect?

A. Temperature is the most important factor. Heat is clearly linked to mood disturbances. We find that heat is an important factor in the increase of emotional problems.

Q. How much effect does humidity have on individuals?

A. Rainy weather leads to gloominess and depression.

Q. And sunshine?

A. It's not too surprising that sunshine, especially in the North, is associated with positive mood states, especially during winter months. What's more interesting is the finding that people are more likely to help others and behave in a prosocial way.

Q. How long does it take the body to adapt to weather changes?

A. When people move from a cool climate to a warm, subtropical one, they're very uncomfortable at first. But adaptation occurs rather quickly – within about two weeks.

Q. Are some people particularly sensitive to weather?

A. Certainly, elderly people tend to be more sensitive to weather than younger people because their cardio-vascular system is less efficient. Body weight also makes a difference. Heavier people have more difficulty coping with hot weather while thin people have a harder time in extreme cold.

Q. In your opinion, what is the ideal weather for physical and emotional well-being?

A. Temperature in the low 70's, with some variation. People enjoy a slight change in temperature – but not a drastic change where the temperature rises or falls more than 15 degrees. A little bit of freeze, but not a strong wind is also ideal. Obviously, sunshine makes people feel good-as long as there is not too much of it.
