ЛЕКСИКОЛОГИЯ АНГЛИЙСКОГО ЯЗЫКА

 

Курс «Лексикология английского языка» относится к числу центральных дисциплин, входящих в обучение филологов-англистов.

В качестве предмета изучения рассматриваются следующие аспекты словарного состава: типы лексических единиц, их структура, морфологические, семантические, стилистические особенности, функционирование слов в речи, неоднородность словарного состава языка, пути и способы его развития в XXI веке.

Курс лекций и семинары по лексикологии имеют цель побудить интерес студентов к реальному функционированию лексических единиц в речевой коммуникации, развить прагматические навыки словоупотребления и уметь применять полученные знания в практике работы учителя в школе.

 

Формы итогового контроля

Итоговый контроль осуществляется в форме зачета, который включает тестирование по теоретическим вопросам лекционного курса и заданиям семинарских занятий.

SEMINAR № 1

Word-Formation in Modern English: Affixation

 

Questions to be discussed

 

  1. What is the subject of word-formation? Give its definition. Explain what it studies.
  2. What are the principal types of word-formation in Modern English? What is meant by affixation?
  3. Prefixation. Debatable problems. Classification of prefixes. Give your examples.
  4. Suffixation. Main principles of classification. Give your examples.
  5. Polysemy and homonymy of derivational affixes.
  6. Synonymy of derivational affixes.
  7. Productivity of derivational affixes.
  8. Origin of derivational affixes.

 

Practical Work

 

  1. Pick out 10-15 words formed by means of prefixation. State what parts of speech they belong to. Characterize the prefixes according to their origin, meaning and productivity.
  2. Pick out 10-15 words formed by means of suffixation. State what parts of speech they belong to. Characterize the suffixes according to their origin, meaning and productivity.

 

Origin (native or borrowed)

Productivity (highly-productive, semi-productive, non-productive)

Stems prefixes/suffixes are added to (noun-stem, verb-stem, etc.)

The part of speech the affix forms

Its meaning (e.g. agent, lack of sth., diminutiveness, ect)

Its stylistic reference (neutral, bookish, slang, etc)

SEMINAR № 2

Word-Formation in Modern English

Word-Composition

Questions to be discussed:

 

What is word-composition? Which types of composition are productive in ME? What are the criteria for distinguishing between a compound and a word combination?

Practical Work

Pick out compound words from a dictionary or a book, state what part of speech they belong to, characterize them according to the way their components are joined together and according to their relationship between them, state whether they are compounds proper or derivational compounds, define the degree of their motivation.

Conversion

Questions to be discussed:

What is understood by conversion? How is conversion treated in Modern Linguistics? What features of Modern English have produced the high frequency of conversion? Which categories of parts of speech are especially affected by conversion?

Practical Work

Explain the semantic correlations within the following pairs of words: sheler – to shelter; fish – to fish; nurse – to nurse; nail – to nail; hammer to hammer; run –to run и др.

SHORTENING AND OTHER WAYS of WORD-FORMATION

Questions to be discussed:

What is understood by the term “shortening”? What types of shortening are distinguished in Modern English? Give examples. Explain the productivity of shortening and stylistic characteristics of shortened words. Give examples.

Speak on the other ways of forming words in English. Explain their productivity and non-productivity. Illustrate your answer by the examples.

Describe:

1) acronyms

2) alphabetisms

3) blending

4) backformation

5) reduplication

6) sound and stress interchange

 

Practical Work

Pick out words formed by means of acronyms, alphabetisms, blending, reduplication, backformation, sound and stress interchange.

English Lexicography

Questions to be discussed:

 

 

    1. Lexicography as a branch of linguistics and its terminology.
    2. Historical Survey of British and American Lexicography (S.Johnson's Dictionary and Webster's Dictionary).
    3. Types of dictionaries: encyclopedic and linguistic dictionaries.
    4. Classification of linguistic dictionaries: dictionaries of synonyms and antonyms; phraseological dictionaries; dictionaries of collocations, etc.
    5. Main problems of dictionary- compiling. Number and selection of vocabulary units. Dictionary information, arrangement of entries, etc.
    6. Modern English Lexicography and Modern Learner's Dictionaries.
