When I was twelve years old, I occurred to be an absolute orphan, together with my elder brother Arkady. There was no one to look after us. In autumn of 1944 my friend took me to the children’s sport school, headed by Vasily Porferyev. I joined the junior group of gymnasts. During the first couple of years I became slimmer, more adroit and more flexible. In two more years my trainer said that I should continue to go in for gymnastics. It was exactly what I wanted.

For many times I won the competitions in my native Ishim, but I had to leave it one day. I went to Sverdlovsk and entered the college of Physical Culture as I had made up my mind to become a pedagogue. There I met my second trainer - Eduard Rung, who taught me to plan the lessons and to train the pupils. To earn my living I had to combine the studies and the work оf a trainer. Being sixteen years old I led the team of Politechnical School which won the championship of Sverdlovsk. This achievement is still the most important in my career.

Then I entered the Acadcmy of Physical Culture in Kiev and met a new trainer - Alexander Mishakov. In 1952 I became the Master of Sports and in 1954 joined the national team of the USSR, to take part in the World Championship in Rome. There our team was the best one and got victory very easily and I won a silver medal on horizontal bar. I was eager to prove myself that it had happened not by chance and took a golden medal of the all-round champion of the USSR the same year.

In 1955, the European Championship was held in Germany. There I was the best on horse, and on horizontal bar I shared a golden medal with another sportsman. In Moscow at the railway station my friends celebrated me with getting a title of Merited Master of Sports of the USSR. In 1956 at the 16th Olympic Games in Melbourne our gymnastic team was the best of all. I won a golden medal for the swinings on horse.

The 14th World Championship took place in Moscow. The fate of the medal and all-round world champion title became clear very quickly as my result was the best one.

They often ask me what was the most difficult in my sport life. I know the answer. It happened at the 17lh Olympic Games in Rome. The gymnasts of Japan always observed our performances very thoroughly and learnt from them, so at the Olympic Games they won in all the kinds of compulsory exercises but there were voluntary exercises and our team was to perform earlier than that of Japan. We had done our best and won. From that Olympics I have a medal of an all round champion, a silver medal on rings, and a golden medal for the exercises on bars and besides I became the third on horizontal bar.

The 18th Olympics were held in Tokyo. From there we took both the team and the individual second prize in competitions. As for me, I got there a bronze medal on rings and a golden medal on horizontal bar.

It was my sixth golden medal for three Olympic Games. In fact it sounds magically but I have six golden medals from the Olympic Games, six from the World and European Championships and six golden medals of an absolute champion of our country.

So my sport life was over. I began to work at the Kiev Academy of Physical Culture and was acknowledged as international class referee and a member of the Technical Committee ofthe International Federation of Gymnastics. It gives me a great pleasure to watch the gymnastic performances as I always recall the happiness of my own victories at such moments.
