There are great trekking and hiking opportunities in many parts of the country. Most of the population live in central Russia, but here too, you can have your holiday of a lifetime. You can enjoy places of remarkable beauty in the snowy winter months or in the hot July sun.
If you want more adventure, you can go to the Caucasus in the south-west or the Altai mountains in the south of Russia. Both places are similar to the Alps. They are full of wild flowers in spring and early summer. Horse-riding and mountain biking are popular activities here in the summer months.
In the far east of Russia, trekkers can explore the volcanoes and hot springs of Kamchatka. The far east of Russia is also a great place to see lots of wild birds and many different animals, including brown bears and, sometimes, the Siberian tiger. Birdwatching, mountaineering sailing, canoeing and whitewater rafting holidays are all now available in Russia.
Among the forests, mountains and great rivers of Siberia, Lake Baikal is one of Russia's most spectacular places of natural beauty. Tourists from all over the world come here. It's a great place for fishing and hunting. Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world (1700 m) with wonderful, clean water. The lake is very clear. You can easily see fish swimming forty metres below you. There is a legend that a boat passenger once lost his watch in the water - and you can still see it on the bottom of the lake!

TRAVELLING
Modern life is impossible without travelling. To understand how true this is, you only have to go to a railway station, a port or an airport. There you will see hundreds of people hurrying to catch a plane, ship or plane, all wanting to go somewhere and get there as quickly as possible.
Of course the fastest way of travelling is by plane. With a modern air-liner you can now travel in one day to places which it took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago. All you have to do is to ring up the air-line booking-office, and they will send your ticket to your home. You can go to the airport in a bus, getting there just in time to hand in your luggage and board the plane. The seats on the plain are comfortable, and you can sit and read, look out the window, or sleep until you arrive at your airport. You can have breakfast in Moscow, dinner in London, Paris or Berlin, or supper in New York on the same day. There is none of the dust and dirt of the railway or car journey.
Travelling by train is slower than by plane but it also has its advantages. You can see the country you are travelling through, and not only the clouds as when you are flying. Modern trains have very comfortable seats in all passenger carriages and there are sleeping-cars and dining-cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by ship when possible. There are large liners, holiday ships and river boats on board which you can visit different countries or parts of your own country. They can enjoy a beautiful sunset at sea. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but a sea voyage or a river trip is a very pleasant way of spending a holiday. People can breathe the rich sea air, look at the harbour. Some prefer to stay on deck, some remain in their cabins.
Many people like to travel by car. The advantages of this way of spending a holiday are that you can make your own time-table, you don't have to buy a ticket, and you're not afraid you'll miss your train. Besides, you can travel 3 or 4 hundred miles a day, just as you like. And then you can stop wherever you wish - where there is something interesting to see, at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal or at a hotel to spend the night. That's why travelling by car is popular for pleasure trips, while people usually take a train or plane when they're travelling on business.
Travelling on foot has the advantages of quite the other sort. The traveller sees the real country, the wild flowers, the quietness and the calm of nature.
