Тема 1. ABOUT MY FAMILY AND MYSELF




Let me introduce myself. My name is Anna. I am twenty years old. I was born in Yekaterinburg on the third of January.

I finished school Number 1 in 2002. I am a student of Ural Institute for the Humanities. I am a first-year student of the Economics Department. We study many interesting subjects, such as economy, history, philosophy, English and others. I have a lot of work to do both at the Institute and at home to be ready for seminars and examinations. I study by correspondence, so I listen to the lectures twice a year. I study with great interest.

I like to read books, listen to music and spend free time with my friends. I attend a sport section.

My family is not very large. We are four in the family. We like to spend our time together. Sometimes we go to the country. But usually we stay at home, watch TV, read books, newspapers or just talk. I love my parents and my younger sister.

I also have uncles, aunts and cousins.

Тема 2. MY WORKING DAY

On week-days I usually get up at seven o'clock in the morning. I make my bed, open the window and do my morning exercises. Then I go to the bathroom where I clean my teeth and wash. If I have time, I take a shower. In ten minutes I'm ready for breakfast. I have a cup of tea or coffee and a sandwich.

After breakfast I leave home. I go to my work by bus (tram, trolleybus). It takes me forty minutes to get to my office. My work begins at nine a.m. and lasts till five p.m.

At two o'clock I have dinner at our canteen.

I have something substantial for dinner, for example, some soup, hot meat or fish. Then I drink a cup of tea or milk.

I come home at six o'clock in the evening and have a short rest, make some telephone calls and do my housework.

We study many subjects at the Institute, so it takes me two or three hours a day to get ready for my seminars and examinations. Sometimes I go to the li­brary to take books. As a rule, I have no free time on my week-days.

Eight o'clock is supper time in our family. We all get together in the kitchen, then go to the living-room and watch TV or discuss some problems. Twice a week I go to the sport section.

At about eleven at night I go to bed.

Тема 3. MY DAY OFF

On my days off I get up later than usual, at nine or ten o'clock. I need not breakfast I watch my favourite TV programs.

I meet with my friends and we discuss our plans together, go to the muse­ums or just walk. I like to see my friends and they often come to my place. We play chess, listen to music and talk a lot.

Sometimes when I am tired of the city traffic and noise I go to the country. I spend a lot of time in the open air and enjoy wonderful nature. In summer I swim in the river and lie in the sun if the weather is fine. In winter I ski in the forest.

In the evening all the members of our family get together. We have supper, make plans for tomorrow. Sometimes we receive guests at our place or go for a walk. I enjoy my days off.

Тема 4. EKATERINBURG

Yekaterinburg, the capital of the Ural Region, is situated on the Isset River. It was founded in 1723 by Tatischev. In 1924 it was given the name of Sverdlovsk. In 1991 the former name was returned.

Nowadays Yekaterinburg is a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre of the Urals. Its population is more than two million people.

From the very beginning the town grew and developed as a centre of in­dustry. At present Yekaterinburg is one of the largest industrial centres of our country. There are many plants and factories in the city.

Yekaterinburg is a large cultural centre. There are a lot of theatres, museums, historical places in our city. We have the Opera House, the Drama Theatre, the Musical Comedy Theatre, the Children's Theatre, the Puppet Show and others. The picture Gallery is famous all over the world.

Yekaterinburg is also a centre of learning in the Urals. One can find many Universities, Academies and Institutes here. Ural Branch of Academy of Sciences carries out a lot of important research. There are lots of educational establishments in Yekaterinburg and about 70 scientific research institutes. The Academy was founded in 1932. The Ural State University was the first Univer­sity in the city.

In the centre of the city there are many banks and offices.

Yekaterinburg is divided into several districts. They are connected with each other by the city transport. There are such means of transport as trams, trolleybuses, buses, taxis. The underground is being constructed in the city now. The city traffic is heavy during the day. The streets of Yekaterinburg are wide and straight.

There are many places of interest in our city. The tourists like to visit 1905 square, the Historical Square, the Eternal Flame and others. All of them are the places of our history.

Тема 5. OUR INSTITUTE

I am a first-year student of Ural Institute for the Railway Transport. We study spe­cialities in economics, management and psychology. At present the Institute trains more than one thousand students. Education is carried out in full-time, part-time and correspondence forms.

I study at the Law Department (Economics, Psychology, Management). My future profession is a manager. We learn many disciplines, such as: philosophy, logics, ethics, aesthetics, religion science, math­ematics, computer, statistics and foreign languages.

In their second - fourth years students get profound training for their future specialities. At the Law Faculty they study theory of state and law, constitution­al, Roman, civil and criminal law and other subjects.

At the Faculty of Economics students study the world economics, interna­tional economic relations, finance, credit, taxes and taxation, audit, banking leg­islation and so on.

At the Faculty of Psychology the main subjects are general, experimental, social, medical, pedagogical, age psychology and a number of special courses.

At the faculty of Management the students study industrial management, innovation management, statistics, finance.

Twice a year we come to the Institute to listen to the lectures and take ex­aminations.

Тема 6. MOSCOW

Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is situated in the centre of the European part of Russia on the Moscva river. It has a population of about 9 million peo­ple. Its territory covers 1000 square kilometres. Moscow is more than eight cen­turies old. It was founded in 1147. It is the largest city in the country and one of the most important industrial, political, cultural and scientific centres in the world.

Moscow is famous for its places of interest, such as: the Red Square, the Kremlin - the seat of the Russian government, the Tretyakovsky Gallery, the Historical Museum and many others. Many beautiful monuments and parks, fashionable shops and modern hotels, theatres and churches decorate the city.

Moscow has multi-economic industry. Its main branches are: machine-build­ing, metal-processing and automobile-building industries.

Moscow is a large educational centre. There are more than 80 Higher Educa­tional Establishments there.

Moscow preserves the beauty of its rich historical past and creates a new image of the modern nowadays.

Тема 7. GREAT BRITAIN

The United Kingdom of Great Britain is situated in the north-west coast of Europe.

The U. K. includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain, the largest island in Europe, contains England, Scotland and Wales. It has an area of 94,249 square miles. The capital of the country is Lon­don. English is the official language.

The population of Great Britain is about 60 million people. London's popula­tion is over 7 million people. The British nation consists of the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish.

The climate of Great Britain is mild and wet. The surface of England and Ire­land is flat, but Scotland and Wales are mountainous. There are many rivers in Great Britain. The main river is the Thames, and the longest is the Severn.

The U. K. is a parliamentary monarchy. The British Parliament consists of two Houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The Prime Min­ister is the head of the government. The main political parties are the Labour Party and the Conservative Party.

The United Kingdom is poor in natural resources. Coal is the most impor­tant of them. In spite of that it is one of the world's most developed industrial countries.

The main centres of industry are Sheffield, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester. Agriculture takes an important sector in the economy of the country. They grow wheat, fruit and vegetables.

Тема 8. LONDON

London is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the centre of the Commonwealth. It lies on the river Thames. The population of London is over 8 million people. The area is 1, 579 square kilometres.

London is more than two thousand years old. The city was once the larg­est industrial, commercial and political centre of a great empire. Now it is the United Kingdom's main centre of population, commerce and culture and the larg­est port in England.

London is a city of contrasts. The West End is the richest part with its beautiful streets, fashionable shops restaurants and hotels. The East End is the district where the poor live. The City is the heart of London, ft is the commer­cial and business centre. Here the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey are situated here. London is famous for Trafalgar Square, the British Museum and many other places of interest.

Today London is a great one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its parks, ancient buildings, museums and libraries.
