He is known to have been working on this problem for many years.

Infinitive without “to”

1) После модальных глаголов must, can (could), may (might), need.

He can speak German.

 

2) После глаголов to make (заставлять), to let (разрешать), to help. Но если эти глаголы стоят в стра­дательном залоге, то “to” употребляется.

He made me read this book. НО: He was made to do it.

Help me (to) do it.

 

3) В обороте Complex Object после глаголов чувственного восприятия – to see, to watch, to hear, to feel, to observe, to notice, etc. Но если эти глаголы стоят в страдательном залоге, то “to” употребля­ется.

I saw her leave the room. HO: He was seen to leave the house.

I heard her sing.

 

4) После выражений had better (лучше бы), would rather, would sooner (предпочел бы):

I would rather not tell them about it. You had better go there at once.

 

Complex Object

I expect him to come here. – Я ожидаю, что он придет сюда.

He saw the boy enter the house. – Он видел, как мальчик вошел в дом.

Употребляется:

1) после глаголов, выражающих желание – to want, to wish, to desire, would like, а также to like, to hate:

He wanted me to come on Sunday. He wishes the work to be done.

 

2) после глаголов чувственного восприятия – to see, to hear, to watch, to feel, etc:

I heard him play the piano.

Инфинитив страдат.залога не употребляется после этих глаголов – употребляется причастие про­шедшего времени:

I heard his name mentioned during the conversation. – Я слышал, как его имя упоминали во время разговора.

 

3) после глаголов, выражающих предположение – to expect, to think, to believe, to consider, to suppose, etc. инфинитив обычно выражен глаголом “to be” (исключение – to expect):

I consider him to be a clever man. I know them to be right.

We expect the contract to be signed tomorrow. – Мы ожидаем, что контракт будет подписан завтра.

4) после глаголов, выражающих приказание, просьбу, разрешение – to order, to command, to ask, to allow. После глаголов этой группы инфинитив употребляется в страдат.залоге:

The manager ordered the cargo to be insured. – Менеджер приказал, чтобы груз был застрахован.

 

5) после глаголов с предлогами – to rely on, wait for, etc:

We waited for him to begin the conversation.

 

Complex Subject

They are said to know Chinese very well. – Говорят, что они хорошо знают китайский язык.

Употребляется:

1) когда сказуемое выражено глаголами – to say, to state, to report, to believe, to think, to consider, to suppose, to announce, etc:

The delegation is reported to have left Moscow. – Сообщают, что делегация уехала из Москвы.

He is said to know several languages. – Говорят, что он знает несколько языков.

 

2) когда сказуемое выражено глаголами – to seem, to appear (казаться), to prove (оказываться), to happen, которые употребляются только в действительном залоге:

He seems to know English well – Кажется, он хорошо знает английский язык.

He proved to be a good worker – Он оказался хорошим рабочим.

 

3) когда сказуемое выражено прилагательными likely (вероятно), unlikely (маловероятно), certain (несомненный), sure (верный). Инфинитив выражает будущее действие!

They are likely to come soon – Вероятно, они придут скоро.

He is sure to return soon – Он несомненно вернется скоро.

 

GERUND

Герундий – неличная форма глагола, обладающая свойствами глагола и существительного и выражающая действие как процесс.

Reading is my hobby. I remember having shown her the letter.

I am surprised at hearing this. He likes being invited by his friends.

He likes inviting his friends to his house. I remember having been shown the letter.

 

!!!! Герундий в форме Active Voice употребляется со значением Passive Voice – после глаголов to need, to want, to require и прилагательного worth:

My shoes need repairing – Мои ботинки нужно починить.

The book is worth reading – Эту книгу стоит прочесть.

 

1) Герундий используется после глаголов: to stop, to finish, to postpone, to avoid, to enjoy, to deny, to remember, to mind, I can’t help (я не могу не):

I enjoy listening to music.

I can’t help telling you about it – Я не могу не рассказать вам об этом.

 

2) Герундий или инфинитив употребляются после глаголов – to begin, to start, to love, to hate, to prefer, to like:

I like playing / to play tennis.

 

3) Герундий используется после глаголов, прилагательных и причастий с предлогами:

to be disappointed at to think of

to be good at to be fond of

to prevent from to be proud of

to consist in to object to

to succeed in to get used to

to be interested in to look forward to

to suspect of to depend on

to approve (disapprove) of to be fed up with

to accuse of to be responsible for

to hear of to warn against

to be afraid of to congratulate on

He was disappointed at not finding him there.

 

4) Герундий используется после существительных с предлогами:

surprise at idea of

disappointment at intention of

apology for necessity of

experience in pleasure of

chance of problem of

fear of way of

habit of hope of

 

There are different ways of solving this problem.

 

5) С предлогами:

After saying this he left the room. Instead of studying he was doing nothing.

He caught cold through getting his feet wet. Besides being clever, he is very hardworking.

He left the room without waiting for a reply. Before leaving for Moscow I called my brother.

On receiving the letter he decided to write the answer.
