I’ve got a family. It is small. We are a family of four. I’ve got a father, a mother and a brother. I haven’t got a sister. My father is.an engineer. He works in a plant. My mother is a teacher. She works at school. My brother is little. He doesn’t go to school. He goes to a kindergarten. He is four.

I like to play. I have got many toys. I have got a teddy-bear, dolls, a ball, a toy monkey and a doll’s house. I like the doll’s house very much. It is big. It is pink and nice.

We have got a cat. It is small and grey. It is very nice. It has big blue eyes, a funny nose, a small mouth and sharp teeth. Its ears are small. It can play hide-and-seek. I love my cat. It loves me, too.

I go to school. I’m a pupil. I have got many friends. We have our classroom. It is nice and large. You can see twelve desks, many chairs, our teacher’s table, a blackboard, two bookcases in the classroom. At the lessons we have pens, pencils, pencil-boxes or pencil-cases, rulers, erasers, textbooks, exercise-books, record-books on the desks.

I like to read. I can read well. I like fairytales. They are very interesting. I like «Cinderella» and «Pinocchio» best.

Few of us like to be told we are average. Americans are no exception. Generalizations about nationalities (like, Americans are optimists, or Germans are professional pessimists) are not usually welcomed, even if they are truthful.

One generalization often made about Americans is that they value their individualism quite high. They pay great attention to their individual differences; to a great number of various choices in their lives; and to the opportunity to do things their own way.

On a daily basis, an American wakes up at 5 am for jogging, then comes back home and rushes to the bathroom to take a shower. As the working day starts at 8 am or 8.30, he/she gets a quick breakfast meal and gets dressed fast. After a morning make-up, for American ladies, and a morning shirt pressing, for American men, he/she runs to their car and heads to the working place. The usual working schedule during a week is from 8 am till 5 pm or 6 p.m. In the evening, he or she drives home and starts preparing an evening meal, called dinner. The leisure time in the evening is spent either with children, or in the night clubs with friends, or at a restaurant with a beloved person. During the weekends Americans go to a church, visit their relatives, meet with their friends, or do anything else that makes them relax.

Nowadays American habits have changed much. Americans buy smaller cars and walk more. More and more of them are cooking "from scratch", instead of using frozen or half-prepared foods. Italian fashion, French wines. German cars, and Dutch cheese are selling well in the U.S. Overall, trends in lifestyles have moved and still move across the Atlantic from Europe.

As a result a typical European may say: "what they are doing in California today, we’ll probably be trying to do in Europe tomorrow".

Let me introduce myself. My name is Ann. I am twenty. I am a student. I study at the university. I am a prospective economist. I like this profession, that’s why I study with pleasure. My parents are not economists, but they support me in my choice. We are a friendly family and try to understand and support each other in any situation. Understanding and support is what I need in friendship as well. Some of my friends study at the same university. After classes we usually gather together, discuss our plans or problems and have some fun. We have a lot of hobbies.

Sometimes we go to the disco, sometimes organize a picnic in the open air, play sports or watch a nice film. One of my hobbies is cooking. So when my friends come to my house, I bake their favourite apple pie. I also like reading. One of my favourite authors is Chekhov. I like his books, because I can analyze the characters, their way of life and find answers to my questions. My friends also like reading. We sometimes discuss our favourite authors, their books, the style of their writing and ideas depicted in their books. I like making new friends, so, if you like, you may become my friend as well.

To prepare children for the future, American parents raise their children to be independent, responsible and competitive. From infancy children in America learn to separate from their parents and act brave even when they are afraid. American children soon learn that they should behave like "big boys" and "big girls" not "babies".

Americans also grow up learning that those who are "the best" will get better jobs, make more money, have bigger houses and will be able to buy more and better consumer goods. American children learn to be competitive with others because only a few will become the best. In sports and in school, Americans want to win, to get the highest grades and the best test scores, to take home the big trophy and get into the best schools. Both boys and girls want to be on the winning team or to be the fastest runner. If a child is not talented in a sport, he or she will probably stop playing it, as it is no fun if he or she can’t win.

In school, students want to get the top grade in each subject. Therefore, students will argue with teachers about two points on a test, because getting two more points makes a difference. Students take the national placement test for college, the SAT, in the 11th form. Once they learn their first score, they take courses and pay tutors to raise their scores, so their test score the next year will be better.

When you ask an American student if he or she would rather get the best grade in the class or help his or her friend to get a better grade. He or she will tell you that they want to get the best grade. If his or her friend wants a better grade, he/she will say, let him or her work harder.

"О, пошли быстро". - зовет Майк и они все выходят на дорогу. Скоро они приходят к горе.

Теперь вторая часть рассказа, в которой разворачиваются интересные события. А именно: один из мальчиков решает покататься по тонкому льду, и лед ломается. Теперь почитаем подробности и узнаем, что же было дальше:

Part II

"Смотрите," - говорит Майк, - "На пруду несколько детей.

Let’s go and see how they skate on the ice".

They all put their sledges under a tree and run down to the pond.

At that time Mr. Kelly, the school teacher, comes up to the pond.

“Come off the ice,” he calls out. “You must not skate there. The ice is too thin.” "Уйдите со льда," - кричит он. - Вы не можете здесь кататься. Лед очень тонкий".
“It’s not too thin,” says Harry. He is a big boy.

"Он не очень тонкий". - говорит Гарри. Он большой мальчик.
“Yes, it is,” says Mr. Kelly. “You must not skate on that pond.”

"Да," - говорит мистер Келли. - "Вы не можете кататься на этом пруду".

And Mr. Kelly goes off down the road.
“Come on,” calls Richard, and all the children run back up the hill to their sledges, only Harry goes back to the pond. "Пошли". - зовет Ричард, и все дети бегут обратно на гору к своим санкам, только Гарри возвращается к пруду.
The children ride down the hill.

Mike rides down to help Richard.
“Look at Harry,” he says, “he is skating on the pond.”

"Посмотри на Гарри," - говорит он, - "Он катается на коньках на пруду".
The children stand and look at Harry.
“I must go down and stop him,” says a little boy and he runs off to the pond.

"Я должен пойти вниз и остановить его". - говорит маленький мальчик и убегает к пруду.

All the children run after the boy.
“Come off the pond, Harry,” they call. “The ice is too thin!”

"Уходи с пруда, Гарри," - зовут они. - "Лед слишком тонкий!"

But Harry only laughs at them.

Suddenly the ice breaks and Harry falls into the water.

“Help, help!” calls Harry. "Помогите, помогите!"
“Oh, he is in the water,” says Mike. "Ох, он в воде". - говорит Майк.
“What can we do?” asks Richard. "Что мы можем сделать?" - спрашивает Ричард
“We must get help,” says Nancy and she runs off to the road.
