PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
I. Glossary (to be learned by heart): latitude, longitude, a strait, a bay, a current, a cliff, a headland, a moor, a plain, a rolling down, a cape, a peninsula, a firth, an estuary, glacial origin, zinc, tin, limestone, iron ore, clay, chalk, gypsum, lead, arable land.
II. Explain the differences (if any) between:

«Веселая зеленая Англия» — так часто называют свою родину английские поэты. Необычайно нежную зелень английского пейзажа обычно объясняют влажным морским климатом страны. Ветры, дующие с Атлантики, приносят на Британские острова частые дожди, благодаря которым английские газоны, иногда называемые восьмым чудом света, зелены круглый год. Белую зиму с коттеджами под снегом англичане чаще видят на рождественских открытках, чем в натуре. Типичная английская зима — это туманы и изморось, приносимые западными ветрами... Впрочем, непредсказуемая английская погода преподносит сюрпризы: порой в ноябре, когда ждешь слякоти и плотного желтоватого тумана, именуемого «гороховым супом», выдадутся золотые, по-летнему теплые деньки. В газетах писали, что в 1963 году люди купались на острове Уайт, в Ла-Манше, под Новый год, 31 декабря.
Дожди определили не только внешний облик Британских островов, но и некоторые черты характера их обитателей. Поскольку им постоянно приходится преодолевать нежелание покидать домашний уют и идти под дождь, англичане выработали в себе эту знаменитую английскую пунктуальность. Даже сильнейший дождь не может заставить англичанина изменить планы — будь то дружеская встреча в пивной или многодневный поход за ядерное разоружение.
Или возьмем такие традиционно английские качества, как осторожность и экономность. Многие считают, что и они тоже развились под влиянием дождливого климата: англичане вечно озабочены тем, чтобы отложить кое-что «на дождливый денек», не забыть захватить зонтик, выходя из дома, и т.д. Правда, теперь зонтики чаще заменяются плащами, тем не менее, в Главную контору лондонского городского транспорта по-прежнему ежегодно приносят около 70 тысяч зонтиков, забытых в автобусах и метро...
Думается, что очарование Британских островов – в необычайном разнообразии ландшафтов на весьма ограниченной территории. Великобритания – в сущности, небольшой остров, где каждый живет с ощущением, что море находится совсем неподалеку, «прямо за углом», как говорят англичане. И поэтому все, что надо, у них «под рукой», сосредоточено на этом небольшом пространстве. Но все вокруг кажется (а часто так оно и есть!) каким-то миниатюрным, «меньше, чем в жизни», как выражаются англичане. И действительно, гора высотой в пять или шесть тысяч метров над уровнем моря была бы здесь монстром, подавившим все вокруг, а река длиной с Волгу просто бы не уместилась.
Пешая прогулка по любому из английских графств даст вам возможность в течение одного дня увидеть все на этой земле, что достойно того, чтобы быть увиденным: зеленые долины, по которым текут реки, милые деревеньки, леса, ровные поля, разделенные на квадратики живой изгородью, вересковые пустоши, а уже через несколько часов пути вы увидите живописные скалы, с которых низвергаются потоки, и романтические пещеры.
B) Read the text again, find in it the information about the following questions and, trying to use the words and phrases given in the previous task, answer them IN ENGLISH.
1. What explains the fact that the English lawns remain green all the year round?
2. What kind of weather do the English people usually have during the Christmas holidays? What weather is typical for English winter?
3. Is the opinion about the English weather being quite unpredictable justified?
4. Are there any relations between the climate and the character of the people who live in it? Do you believe that the rainy climate is responsible for the English punctuality, which they call "the courtesy of the kings"? And what about them being economical and cautious? Has the rain anything to do with it?
5. What is the main charm of the British Isles? How does the smallness of the territory the English people live on influences their mentality? What strange feeling have the tourists while staying in Great Britain?
6. What can a day's walk give to a willing tourist? What will he see during his tramp through any of the English counties?
