Extra-mural and Evening Education.

Dear brother,

I feel very excited at the thought that in a week I shall be with you again on summer holidays. I am through with my exams and I am already a third-year student.

I had to work very hard to do well in my exams this year. The fact is that just a month after winter holidays I fell ill and missed many lectures. The material being very complicated, I could not have managed with my exams if I had not been given some consultations.

In some of my earlier letters I told you all about the other students of our group; well, I want to tell you a few words about Victor. He intends to work in the laboratory of a research Institute next year and take a correspondence course at our Institute. The fact is that extra-mural and evening education here has been making rapid advance. The program requirements of an extra-mural education are similar to those for regular ones, there being differences only in teaching procedure.

Extra-mural students do not have regular studies as we do, but they are provided with all kinds of assistance such as instructions, study guides, oral and written consultations, not to speak of special lectures.

According to the curriculum of the faculty an extra-mural student fulfils a certain number of written assignments in different subjects, such as history, maths, physics, chemistry, a foreign language, descriptive geometry, and does practical work. He has to hand in these written test works and drawings at various times. If the assignment is accepted by the teacher, the student is then entered for exams.

Extra-mural diplomas have the same value as those of regular institutes.

It is not easy to combine work and study, but much is done by the state here to help part-time students. They are granted from 10 to 40 days’ paid leave every year (depending on which year of the course they are in) to take examinations and tests, and for laboratory work. Another 30 days are given for state exams.

Besides that, they get four months’ paid leave to prepare their diploma work.

So, you see, it’s not so bad taking extra-mural course.

How are you all at home? I hope you are all keeping well. Raj, try to get your leave at the time I am home, we’ll have a good time.

Love and all good wishes,

Salil.

Our Institute.

The Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys is one of the leading higher educational institutions in metallurgy in Russia. Its history is closely connected with the development of the state metallurgical industry.

The Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys was formed out of the Moscow Miners’ Academy and founded in 1918. The student body of our institute is 6000. 5000 are students of the Day Department and 1000 are students of the Evening Department.

The main building is situated in Lenin Street.

The branch of the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys was founded in 1992 in Novotroitsk. Our branch is staffed by highly-qualified teachers, professors and research assistants. They do intensive academic and research work: give lectures, seminars; hold exams, tutorials, make laboratory experiments and scientific investigations.

The students of our institute have favourable conditions for studies. Numerous classrooms, lecture-halls, a good library, a diner, a sport ground are at their disposal. The laboratories are well-equipped with up-to-date devices and apparatus.

Many students do research work in the Students’ Research Society and take part in scientific conferences which are held every year.

The academic year is devided into two terms. Exams are held in January and June. The students take exams in all the subjects they study. If a student passes the exam well, he gets a state grant.

In winter and summer students have vacations. The course of study lasts five years. At the end of the five-year course students defend their diploma papers. When the students graduate from the Institute, they get diplomas of the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys.
