Today, income from advertising in newspapers is as essential as income from sales.
2. The national newspapers fall into two broad categories: "popular" and "quality" press. All the popular papers are "tabloid" in format. The tabloids are mass entertainment. The tabloids' news content is minimal and their emphasis is on gossip, emotion and scandal. Quality newspapers include news, political and economic analysis and social and cultural problems. There are over 900 free newspapers financed by advertising.
