My studies at the University
I am a first year student at the Tomsk State Teacherʾs Training University. It is one of the largest specialized higher educational establishments of this kind in Siberia. It was founded in 1931 and since that time it has been playing the leading role in training of qualified teachers of different specialities.
At the beginning of its foundation the University had two faculties and fifty students. Now there are many chairs and faculties where thousands of students study. International connections are developing nowadays and a lot of students come from abroad to get education at our University. It is very popular because the teaching staff includes doctors and candidates of sciences.
There are two departments at the University: a day-time department and a correspondence (extra-mural) department. The main period of studies at the University lasts four years. According to the university curriculum the course of studies is divided into two parts: a two year-period of general training and a two-year period of professional training. During the general training students take up different subjects of general nature, such asHistory, Philosophy,Pedagogics, Foreign languages and a number of other subjects. The professional training

includes subjects of their special field: Ph y sics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Literature and so on. At the end of the course of studies students get a bachelor degree. Then every student can enter a graduate school in order to get a Master degree.
The academic year begins on the 1-st of September and ends in June. It is divided into two terms. Every term lasts four months and students have to attend lectures, seminars, to do practical works, to carry out laboratory tests and do their teaching practice at schools. At the end of each term students take credit tests and exams. Those who donʾt miss classes, work hard and pass exams successfully, get grants and scholar ships.
The students of our university study six days a week except Sunday. The classes usually begin at half past eight. There are short breaks between classes when students can have a snack at a snack bar.
At the university there are all the necessary facilities to study well: college buildings, hostels, sports halls, a library which contains a lot of books and supplies, a comfortable assembly hall where conferences, meetings, studentsʾ parties and concerts of amateur art take place.

The correspondence department holds classes only two times a year: in winter and summer. Every year extra-mural students receive from 30 to 40 daysʾ leave on full pay to prepare for their exams. Nowadays, the role of extension techniques increase and a great number of students choose this kind of education. The diplomas by the extra-mural department have the same value as the diplomas of all other universities.
