II. Consider the paradigmatic patterning of the given sentences.
a) Suggest the variants of constructional derivation of the 2 kernel
sentences: Mary studied hard. Mary achieved the success.
b) Suggest the variants of predicative derivation of the sentence:
I have written the letter.
III. Identify the type of syntactic opposition: inducement – statement,
question – statement, probability - fact, modal identity – fact, negation- affirmation, unreality – reality, specialized actual division – non-specialized division, modal subject-action relation – fact, phase of action – fact, emphasis – emotional neutrality:
He has come. - Has he come?

SYNTAX OF THE SIMPLE SENTENCE: TRADITIONAL VIEW
Topics for Discussion
1. The structure of the simple sentence. The notion of a predicative line.
2. Structural classifications of the simple sentence:
a) one-member/two-member sentences;
b) complete and elliptical sentences; the problem of differentiation of one-member
sentences and elliptical sentences.
3. Sentence parts classification. Approaches to the analysis of the sentence structure: the
traditional scheme of sentence parsing (the main sentence parts, the secondary
sentence parts); the model of immediate constituents (the IC-model).
