Чаще всего артикль отсутствует перед названиями должностей, званий и позиций.
Артикль не употребляется, если:
1. слово называет уникальную должность, позицию или звание и является в предложении именной частью сказуемого или приложением:
- He is chief of this expedition. – Он глава этой экспедиции.
В данном примере присутствует составное именное сказуемое is chief, в котором именная часть chief не имеет артикля, поскольку обозначает единственную должность (позицию) в экспедиции – глава в экспедиции один, и другого нет.
- My brother, President of our company, has nothing against it. – Мой брат, президент нашей компании, ничего не имеет против.
В данном предложении существительное President является приложением и названием единственной должности в компании (президент в данной компании только один). С уникальной должностью в приложении артикль не используется.
2. с названиями должностей, позиций и званий использованы глаголы elect, appoint, make и т.п.:
- He was elected chairman of the board. – Он был выбран председателем правления.
- Who was appointed chief executive of the firm? – Кто был назначен исполнительным директором фирмы?
Однако, если названия должностей, позиций и званий являются подлежащими или дополнениями в предложении, то перед ними ставится определенный артикль:
- The chairman of the board approved the plan. – Председатель правления утвердил план.
В данном предложении слово chairman обозначает единственную должность председателя в правлении, однако данное существительное употребляется в качестве подлежащего, поэтому перед ним использован определенный артикль.
- The letter was signed by the head master. – Письмо было подписано директором школы.
В данном примере head master является названием единственной должности директор в школе, однако название этой должности использовано в качестве дополнения, поэтому перед словом употреблен определенный артикль.

Titles that follow a personal name are generally used without any article before the main noun in the title.
