This work examines the problems arising from the deterioration of the environment and covers the issues of conservation and biodiversity protection at the molecular-genetic, the ontogenetic, the species-population and the ecosystem levels. The book offers suggestions concerning changes in practice in agriculture, industry, recreation etc. – in all sectors of society life and functioning. The deterioration of the environment has become one of the most serious problems of the twentieth century. The main part of the book is formed by the innovative materials on the role of aquatic

organisms in water self-purification and biogenic migration of elements. The role of aquatic mollusks in the biogenic migration of metals is given special attention. The organisms that were studied included several species of organisms inhabiting freshwater and marine environments. Among those species were mollusks Unio pictorum, zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha, marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and some other organisms. One of the papers contributes to developing new ecological technologies to treat polluted waters using aquatic vegetation (macrophytes, plants), for instance, elodea Elodea canadensis, Potamogeton crispus and other species. The collective monograph was initiated and organized by Dr. S.A. Ostroumov as a step toward contributing to the scientific basis of environmental safety and sustainability.

The book was published under the aegis of Moscow State University and the Moscow Society of Researchers of Nature (MOIP), the oldest public society in Russia. A new theory for the biomechanisms for water self-purification is presented in the S.A.Ostroumov’s book ‘Aquatic Organisms in Water Self-Purification and Biogenic Migration of Elements’ (2008, 200 p.). Hydrobionts (aquatic organisms) are actively involved in various processes leading to water purification. Almost all main groups of organisms are involved, which is discussed and analyzed in the paper. In the theory, the results of the author's experiments on the effects of various pollutants on aquatic organisms were used. (Moscow, Piatigorsk, State Linguistic University, ISBN 5-89966-562-5). The paper is a part of the collective volume, the international collection of scientific works of Russian and foreign scientists «Actual Problems of Communication and Culture – 9», issue 9. The volume is associated with the 35th anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Russia. The 509-page book contains the contributions of the participants of the V Conference of graduates of Fulbright Program (23 - 24 March 2009). The paper includes the lists of universities that use as teaching aids the books authored and coauthored by Dr. S.A. Ostroumov: ‘Introduction to Biochemical Ecology’ (the 9-item list), ‘Introduction to Problems of Biochemical Ecology’ (the 12-item list), ‘Conservation of Living Nature’ (the 9-item list), and ‘Levels of Conservation of Living Nature’ (the 7-item list). With addendum, some recent additions to the list of universities were made. Some additions were made to tables 1, 3 and 4, and the text.

В статье приведены списки университетов, которые используют в качестве учебных пособий и включают в списки рекомендованной для студентов, магистрантов и аспирантов книги с авторством и соавторством доктора биологических наук С.А.Остроумова, в том числе: «Введение в биохимической экологии», «Введение в проблемы биохимической экологии», «Cохранение живой природы», «Уровни охраны живой природы».

Необходимо подчеркнуть, что чрезвычайная важность химических подходов для изучения экологических и биосферных процессов, связей между организмами и их средой была осознана и обоснована в трудах В. И. Вернадского, который писал: "В целом весь океан должен рассматриваться - в каждом его месте - как неразрывная связь мертвой инертной материи и непрерывно изменчивого и химически меняющего мертвую окружающую среду живого вещества" [Вернадский, 1923. С. 18]. "Разнородное живое вещество океана, жизнь моря, взятая в целом, может быть рассматриваема как специальный механизм, совершенно изменяющий химию моря" [Вернадский, 1954. С. 197]. В состав биосферы Земли входит, согласно Вернадскому [1965. С. 59], наряду с живым, биогенным и косным веществом "биокосное вещество (разрядка Вернадского - Авт.), которое создается одновременно живыми организмами и косными процессами, представляя динамические равновесные системы тех и других". По Вернадскому [1965. С. 231], "в биосфере мы имеем дело с разными формами биосферного вещества: косного инертного малоактивного вещества, живого дисперсного, чрезвычайно химически и геологически активного, и биокосного вещества, являющегося закономерной структурой из живого и косного вещества". "Живое вещество есть форма активированной материи" [Вернадский, 1923. С. 14]. Важность использования химических

и биохимических подходов для познания экосистем и биоценозов акцентировалась и многими последователями В. И. Вернадского, экологами и гидробиологами, в том числе С. Н. Скадовским [1955]. Подчеркивая огромное позитивное значение трудов Вернадского, приходится признать, что не все аспекты его учения разработаны одинаково детально. Дальнейшее развитие естествознания выявило и некоторые неизбежные пробелы, в том числе в вопросе о том, какова степень интегрированности живого вещества и биосферы в целом и каковы молекулярные механизмы регуляции относительного равновесия в биосфере (говоря современным языком, "экологического равновесия" - хотя и этот термин нуждается в дальнейшем уточнении), формирования биокосных тел биосферы. При всей ценности концепции биосферы в работах В. И. Вернадского и продолжающей ее в определенном смысле концепции биогеоцено
