UniverCity 2020 - project description
Universities are places of knowledge production and free thinking. Or at least they should be. Social sciences, economics and law are particularly concerned with social developments. They also analyse and reflect social developments with the aim of formulating recommendations for action to politics and society.
As places of discourse interested in knowledge and truth, they ideally offer scope for critical, reflexive thinking and, as places of education for future elites and leaders, are important instances of socialization.
Members of the university also represent relevant groups of civil society whose socio-demographic characteristics make them socially, culturally and politically more active groups and thus strongly influence civil society commitment.
Against this background, the role played by universities in the production of local welfare, the strengthening of civil society and the imparting of critical reflection and the associated competences and skills to promote critical thinking and paricipation will be discussed in a summer school (including workshop and preparatory seminars in Tübingen and Petrozavodsk) using the example of the university cities of Petrozavodsk and Tübingen. The main aim is to develop students' competences with regard to the framework and success conditions of participation and civil society involvement, to build up civic competence and to understand different framework conditions and their impact on individual action in Russia and Germany.
Within the framework of the preparatory seminars, the given framework topic will be concretised in a participatory manner with the students along the lines of the questions formulated above. Research includes, among other things:
- What is the self-image of the university with regard to the city, civil society and local politics?
- What competencies and skills for strengthening critical thinking and civil society skills are taught at the university?
- What contribution do universities make to the production of public welfare?
- The role of members of the university in urban life, e.g. as experts, committed citizens...
