Tips & Warnings

Most government grants and research grants will require a proposal which not only outlines your research but an estimated budget for how the money would be spent. Be sure you know how to do this correctly and do so according to the writing style guide most commonly used in your field of study. If your proposal is sloppy (небрежный, безграмотный) and/or missing information, you will not get the grant.

If you write an inquiry letter to a private organization, only ask if they offer research grants. Do not ask for money in an inquiry letter. If they respond affirmatively, then proceed through the proper channels to request a grant.

How to Obtain a Research Grant

Your organization may qualify for a research grant.

Finding a federal grant to help pay for scientific or even nonprofit research can save upwards of thousands of dollars. Research grants can start anywhere from $500 and go over $15,000. These grants most often pay for specific projects or programmes, rather than ongoing operating expenses, so it's important to read the qualifications carefully before you make any kind of proposal.

To receive a grant, you need to know where to look and how to apply. There are many to choose from, but fortunately, there is a also a website set up by the federal governments that provides many options.

Instructions

1. Register with the federal government's official grant website to view and apply for different research grants. To register, you will need to put your or your company's name, address and phone number.

2. Browse for a research grant. Go to the search form and type in a keyword, such as "research". You will pull up hundreds of different grants available. From there you can scroll down the list of grants to find one that you may qualify for. Some research grants are only available to the government agencies.

3. Apply for a research grant. Once you've chosen a grant that you wish to apply for, you can do it online. When applying for a grant, you will have to write a proposal. It should be detailed and relay exactly what the funding will be used for and why it's important. Make sure to have other colleagues review
the proposal and invite suggestions. If the proposal isn't clear or doesn't make sense, you may get declined for the grant.
