People of Prikamyie have deep rooted original culture. It has accumulated

customs and Western Ural nationalities that accepted the priority o f Russian spirit, but did not bann their own humanitarv heritage. Bright examples o f the past culture such as sculpture, folk crafts and stone - cutting were preserved for descendents and ore exhibited in the local museum. 5000 amateur folk groups are a striking illustration o f culture tradition living force. Among them are such groups as ’’Karavai”, ’’Fair”, ’’Uralsky Khorovod”,” Uzory Prikamiya”, ’’Rossiyanie”,that are famous not only in Russia but in many countries abroad.

Taking into account the number o f acting theatres one can ’t consider Perm a

provincial city. Ten professional theatres work here. Perm Opera and Ballet

theatre named after P. Tchaikovsky occupies a special place. The history o f the

theatre goes back to times o f provintial musical society. The family of outstanding

Russian entrepreneur and ballet popularizer Sergey Dyagilev was among its

members.

Another leading stage is the Perm Academic Drama Theatre, founded in

1927. Like the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, The Academic Dram a Theatre has

staged the worlds m ost prestigious.

has it won many prizes for its work.

Perm’s Museums

 

The Perm Art Gallery boasts large collections of arts. Apart from

numerous paintings o f Flemish, French and Italian, it also has modem art

collections on exhibition. The museum’s collection is among the very largest ones

in Russia. The museum is located in a former cathedral, now a landmark o f Perm

in the centre of the city.

In the same building, but a separate section, the Regional Museum o f Local

Studies and History (founded in 1890) is definitely worth a visit for those who are

interested in the history' and the culture o f the Urals. The museum boasts a wide

variety of armory, coinage, pottery, handicrafts, archeology and minerals. It also

tells about the Permian period, the geological era in which the Urals were formed.

The partly open - air artillery museum at the northern end of the city centre

displays all generations o f rocket and artillery (vehicles), as constructed in Perm,

as well as a wide range o f information o f the history of the industry. Actually, the

city is known for its large war industry ever since late 1800’s, all canons and

artillery of former Soviet Union as well as engines for Tupolev and M iG aircrafts

were (and in less amounts still are) manufactured in Perm. The museum offers

detailed information on its wide range o f warfare. The outside part o f the museum

can be entered free of charge at any time. This museum is a part o f our city

excursion.

“Khokhlovka” (Open - air museum of and Wooden Architecture and

Ethnography) is in fact a collection of original structures as they existed in the 17

century. Inside the buildings, all kinds of tools, handicrafts and clothes of that time

are exposed. The guide will take you around the museum, explaining about the

hard life 300 years ago. You will be amazed by the beauty of the site; Khokhlovka

is located on a green hill and offers great view s over the Kama river and nearby

villages.
