Did you know:

Several matches of FIFA World Cup 2018 will be held in Kaliningrad.

The oblast forms the westernmost part of Russia; it has no land connection to the rest of the country. Since its creation after World War II, it has been a Russian exclave, first of the Russian SFSR and then of the Russian Federation. The fall of the Soviet Union left it isolated from the rest of Russia. It is surrounded by Poland on the south, Lithuania on the east and north, and the Baltic Sea on the west. Visa-free travel to the main part of Russia is only possible by sea or air. This political isolation became more pronounced when Lithuania and Poland both became members of the European Union and NATO as well as entering the Schengen Zone, which means that the oblast is now surrounded by territories affiliated with these institutions.

The oblast's largest city and administrative center is Kaliningrad, which has historical significance as both a major city of the historical state of Prussia and the capital of the former German province of East Prussia. After World War II, East Prussia was divided between the USSR and Poland, and Königsberg was renamed after the Soviet Head of State Mikhail Kalinin.

All in all:

Kaliningrad Oblast is an exclave of Russia surrounded by Poland, Lithuania, and the Baltic Sea. It’s largest river is the Pregolya.

Notable geographical features include:

  • Curonian Lagoon (shared with Lithuania)
  • Vistula Lagoon (shared with Poland)

Major cities and towns: Baltiysk, Chernyakhovsk, Gusev, Kaliningrad, Sovetsk

Some facts from the history of our city:

· Kaliningrad – is a special city among the Russian cities.

· The city has been set up in 1255 by the Teutonic Order on the lands of Prussian tribes as a fortress. The city was named Koenigsberg that in a translation from German "the Royal Mountain (Force)" means.

· Two months of continuous air and artillery attacks in 1945 have destroyed 90 % of the industrial and administrative structures, about thirty churches and prayer halls.

· After war was ended, anything German should be destroyed completely, as a reminder of the fascist past of this region. For this reason a lot of architectural constructions miraculously escaped the bombs, were destroyed by the Soviet authorities. One of the biggest losses is the King Palace in Kaliningrad. After it was damaged by the English and American aircrafts the Soviet authorities blew up the Palace and destroyed completely. Now on its place stands the useless building disfiguring the city face. Still you can find the streets and places in Kaliningrad showing its origins. Their architecture is a combination of constructions of the past which allow to judge talented architects, able to unite necessary with profitability and the post-war constructions, new elite buildings in the European style. In Kaliningrad there are unusual, a little-known sights.

· Kaliningrad was rebuilt and went through industrialization and modernization. Kaliningrad region was one of the most western territories of the USSR. Kaliningrad oblast became a strategically important area during the Cold War and was closed to foreign visitors.
