Washington
Washington, D. C. (District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States of America, named after the first President George Washington. The District of Columbia was named after Christopher Columbus. Washington is situated on the left bank of the Potomac River between the states of Virginia and Maryland. The population of the capital is about three million people.
Washington is one of the beautiful cities of the USA. There are a lot of parks and gardens there. It is famous for its cherry trees. They were brought there as a gift from Japan in 1912. Washington was planned by several people – Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French engineer, Major Andrew Ellicott and Benjamin Banneker, an astronomer and mathematician.
There are libraries, art galleries and museums in the city. The Mall is one of the most popular places of interest of the capital. There are a lot of museums here visited by citizens of Washington and tourists every day. Capitol Hill is the highest place in the city. It is the center of Washington. The Capitol is situated here. It was built by William Thornton, an amateur architect. It is the seat of Congress. There is the law that forbids building houses higher than the Capitol in Washington.
The White House is the official residence of the USA presidents. There are 132 rooms in it. George Washington did not live in the White House. He died in 1799. The White House has been used as the residence since 1800. John Adams was the first President who lived in the House. Pennsylvania Avenue runs from the Capitol to the White House. It is often used for official processions and parades.
There are a lot of memorials and monuments in Washington. The Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial are the most famous. The Washington Monument is situated in Potomac Park it is dedicated to the first President of the United States. It is over 555 feet high and one of the highest stone constructions in the world. The Lincoln Memorial was built in the style of a classical Greek Temple. It has 36 columns. Each column is the symbol of the state in the Union when Lincoln died. The monument to Lincoln is situated in the big hall.
Among other monuments one should mention the monument to Albert Einstein, the great physicist, the author of the theory of relativity. One of the most famous places of interest in Washington is the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It was created by the U. S. government to present music and dance programmes by groups from the U. S. and other countries. More than 30 nations gave gifts to help build and decorate the center. After the death of President Kennedy the center was renamed in memory of him.
Thousands of tourists from the USA and other countries visit Washington every day. They come to see its beautiful streets, parks, monuments and museums.
