Bird Flu

 

Bird flu is an infectious disease due to a type of influenza virus that is hosted by birds, but may infect several species of mammals. It was first identified in Serbia Montenegro in the early 1900s and is now known to exist worldwide.

A strain of the H5Nl-type of avian influenza virus that emerged in 1997 has been identified as the most likely source of a future influenza pandemic and is known to have infected 137 people in Asia since 2003, killing 70.

In humane, bird flu viruses cause similar symptoms to other types of flu. These include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, conjunctivitis and, in severe cases, severe breathing problems and pneumonia that may be fatal. The severity of the infection will depend to a large part on the state of the infected person's immune system and if the victim has been exposed to the strain before.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a substantial risk of an influenza epidemic in the near future, most probably from the H5N1 type of avian influenza virus. One of the primary concerns is that the virus could quickly spread across countries as various birds follow their migration routes. In response, countries have begun planning in anticipation of an outbreak.

AIDS

 

AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is thought to be caused primarily by a virus that invades white blood cells (lymphocytes) and certain other body cells including the brain.Although treatments for both AIDS and HIV exist to slow the virus' progression in a human patient, there is no known cure.

Once inside a human host cell, the retrovirus using its own capacities begins to copy its genetic code into a DNA molecule which is then incorporated into the host's DNA. The virus becomes an integral part of the person's body. But the viral DNA may sit hidden and inactive within human cells for years, until some trigger stimulates it to replicate.

On average, the dormant virus seems to be triggered into action three to six years after first invading human cells. When switched on, viral replication may speed along, producing new viruses that destroy fresh lymphocytes. As viral replication spreads, the lymphocyte destruction virtually sabotages the entire immune system.

In essence, HIV viruses do not kill people, they merely render the immune system defenceless against other infections, e.g. yeast invasions, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, massive herpes infections, special forms of pneumonia that kill in half of all AIDS patients.

A Drop of Blood

 

Do you know that we have between 250 and 300 million red cells in each drop of blood? As for the white cells there are only about 350 to 500 thousand of them in a drop of your blood so long as you are in good health.

But suppose ' you get an infection—appendicitis, for example. Almost immediately the number of white cells begins to increase until you may have as many as a million and a halt in a drop of blood.

The disease germs produce certain chemicals in the body. These chemicals make the white cells divide, so that each white cell produces two new cells. The chemicals also stimulate the movement of the white cells toward the place where the germs arc causing the infection. Then, when a white cell is close to a germ, it is further stimulated to change its shape. It wraps 2 the germ up.

The germ is now inside the white cell, which then proceeds to digest it. So we can say that the white cells really eat up disease germs. Our blood also has proteins in it. And it has a lot of little cells called platelets, which contain a special chemical. Ordinarily, of course, this chemical stays inside the platelets.

But, suppose, you cut your finger. The blood comes to the surface of the wound and the platelets break down. The chemical is released and it starts to affect the gelatin — like protein in the blood, building a network of fibres. Soon the network is big enough to form a jelly-like stopper for the wound. We say that the blood has clotted and the wound stops bleeding.
