GATE TO THE USA

Visitors to the USA come first to New York and here they acquaint themselves with the American way of life, American culture and the American language. New York is really a gate to the USA. But it is more than just the door: it is also a window through which people observe the life of the whole nation. In New York Harbour (гавань) there is the bronze Statue of Liberty. France presented it to the USA in 1886.

New York is a city of five districts. They are Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. The heart of the city is Manhattan. It is a rocky island, thirteen miles long and two miles wide. Manhattan is the smallest of the five city’s districts in size, and it is not the largest in population. There are many skyscrapers, Central Park, Times Square and Harlem in it.

There are eleven avenues and about three hundred streets there. The most fashionable is the Fifth Avenue. It divides Manhattan into two equal parts. All streets have the word “East” or “West” before the number. This makes it very easy to find any address north of Washington Square where the Fifth Avenue begins. The only exception is Broadway; it bends all along the length of Manhattan.

The population in Brooklyn is larger than in any other part of the city - about 3,000,000. Few people know, however, that most of New York’s shipping docks are in Brooklyn. It is the largest naval shipbuilding center in the world.

Richmond is a district of piers and warehouses. Its population is only 200,000 people. There are the well-known Zoo and Botanical Gardens there.

Queens is both a residential and industrial area. New York’s two biggest airports are in Queens too. They serve long-distance flights and organize excursion flights over the city.
