Hawkes Bay Opera House
28 Jul, 2009
Award Winning Steel Construction from Patton Engineering for this arched retractable plaza roof.
The award was for the ‘Buildings up to three Storey’s’ category at the inaugural Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) ‘Excellence in Steel Construction’ awards. The award recognises excellence in steel fabrication, construction, innovation, sustainability, teamwork, safety and best practice.
The arched roof has been dubbed an architects dream but an engineer’s nightmare. However Managing Director Mike Patton said the firm enjoyed unique one off challenges such as the roof. “It’s a very visible and high profile building and one that the entire team can be proud of being a part of,” Mike said.
The roof, which covers the 27 metre long plaza courtyard adjacent to the Hawke’s Bay Opera House, was an integral part of the fullscale restoration and refurbishment of this iconic Hastings Building. The Architects vision for this part of the Opera House make over was for a mechanical roof structure that retained the openness of the plaza while making it an all-weather venue. Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule said a worldwide search for an engineering firm that could construct the roof eventually led the council back to its own district. “It turns out that, right on our doorstep we have some of the best brains, the best engineering and the best technology in the world.
“The architects had all the ideas and these guys transformed them into reality. It had to work but it had to look good too,” Mr Yule said. The end result is a ‘tri-truss’ structure over the courtyard that supports a lightweight retractable roof. The roof material is made from a high tech PVC sail material, and is able to be retracted to a central point with relative ease. Each truss weighs six tonnes, and they are 12 metres high above the plaza.
Mr. Brad Patton Manager of Hawke’s Bay Sand Blast a subsidiary company of Patton’s said the project was a challenge as you had to spray each truss from so many angles. Brad jokes and says "just as well we used Altex Coatings other wise we would still be here, The Altra Zinc 605/Altra Shield 2000/Urthane Metallic went on like a dream.

Terminal 1 at Pearson International Airport was the feature landmark in the fall tour of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.
Airport terminal receives international recognition

With Terminal 1 at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport reaching completion this January, members of the steel and related industries were recently given an in depth examination of the role their industry and product has played in the creation of the 3.6-million square-foot steel structure.
|
A tour of the terminal’s central processor — a graciously curving departure hall with a 200-foot-long arched roof — and the almost-completed International Pier F, was the highlight of the Ontario Region of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) annual fall tour.
Approximately 200 engineers, architects, detailers, fabricators, erectors and related industry members went on the tour and were given a quick history of the $4.4 billion, two-phase Greater Toronto Airport Authority redevelopment project.
It was conducted by representatives from Airport Architects Canada, the joint venture architectural team and Halcrow Yolles (formerly Yolles Partnership), the structural engineers of record.
Participants walked through the departures hall which features exposed long-span arch steel members and linear skylights. They also viewed the double-height passenger concourse and mezzanine levels. Also on the itinerary was a visit to the arrivals balcony, which provides a sense of orientation to passengers upon arrival. Both of these areas are similar to the departures hall and are defined by the use of skylights in combination with the long-span roof above, said the tour guides.
“The extensive use of highly designed and fabricated exposed structural steel along with natural light, creates a beautiful and harmonious series of spaces and reinforces the architectural design,” said Laura Ettelman, project manager for Airport Architects Canada and associate partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, New York City.
The other joint venture team architects are Moshe Safdie Associates Ltd. of Somerville Mass. and Mississauga Ontario-based Adamson Associates Architects.
“Not only does the design expose the main support members, it also defines load transfers and connections as beautiful design elements, expressing the nature supporting and bracing elements,” she said.
The event actually began at the Toronto Congress Centre with detailed project presentations from Ettelman and Halcrow Yolles senior associate Michael Meschino.
“It was a very large project and there were a lot of people involved,” said Ettelman, in quick review of the project, whose design phase started in 1997.
Factors such as the fast-track schedule ruled out the more conventional foundation up style of construction and that led to the decision to build the processor “top down” with the roof built first and the floor and interior elements later, said Meschino.
But that required an intensive amount of upfront coordination and planning in the very early design stages, he said.
“We needed the input of the fabricators and erectors very early on.”
Along with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and the other project partners, those fabricators and erectors were given special awards by John Cross, vice president of marketing for the American Institute of Steel Construction. Earlier this year, the airport received the institute’s first-ever IDEAS2 Award in the $75 million plus category. It replaces separate architectural and engineering awards, said Cross.

DETAIL 6/2010 Steel Construction? 15.50 >> order | There’s a good reason why steel is regarded as a particular challenge for designers. Barely another material exists that can offer such precision over large dimensions. Huge spans or cantilevers of 30 to 40 metres – such as those by Santiagao Calatrava in Liиge, in Belgium – can be realised without problems. With his station concourse, Calatrava proves once again what a light, transparent overall effect can be achieved, despite the fact that 10,000 tonnes of steel are used. In an interview with us, Calatrava discusses his visions as an architect, engineer and sculptor. Meanwhile, with their design of a steel company’s sales centre in Linz, Austria, Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes also draw attention to the potential of steel, with a large cantilever over the entrance forming a distinctive element of the building. The array of different forms that steel can take in buildings is fascinating, as shown by our selection of examples including the perforated metal sheeting on the exterior of a small workshop in Zurich, such as those often used by Dominique Perrault (including on the tennis centre in Madrid), or the mighty, open-span profiles of a protective building at an archaeological find spot as realised by Paredes Pedrosa arquitectos in Spain. This construction is symbolic for the range of possibilities available with steel construction today, whether polished, laminated or specifically corroded. The fact that the choice of joining method for the construction elements is very much a design factor is shown by the comparison of steel joinings in the article from Alexander Reichel and Gerald Schnell. If one looks at sustainable construction not just in terms of energy and the environment, another important factor – particularly for steel buildings that tend to have a longer lifespan – is whether a building is accepted and well-used in the long term. This means that in addition to all its functional design elements, the memorable architecture of a building is also crucial.
