NEW YORK
1. New York is the gateway to the USA. But it is more than a door; it is also a window through which you may observe the life of the whole nation. As you walk about New York you will get much additional information about the history, economy, literature, art and music of the country as a whole.
2. New York, the nation’s largest city, the richest port is a national leader in business, manufacturing, communications, service industries, fashion and the arts. New York is situated at the mouth of the Hudson River. Its population is more than 12 mln people.
3. The first view of the city is the bronze Statue of Liberty. France presented the USA with it in 1886. The Statue is 152 feet high. A new American Museum of Immigration is opened at the base of the statue.
4. New York City consists of five boroughs. The heart of New York is Manhattan. It contains 3 parts: Downtown, Midtown and Uptown.
5. Downtown Manhattan is the business centre of the nation. Wall Street, America’s financial centre is world famous. It symbolizes the money market and finance of the US. The Campus of New York University is also situated here.
6. Midtown Manhattan is famous for its places of interest. Pennsylvania Station is the busiest station in the USA. It is also rich in skyscrapers: Rockefeller Centre, the Empire State Building and World Trade Centre. The United Nations Headquarters occupy a six-block area. The new Madison Square Garden is the largest indoor stadium in the city. The Museum of Modern Art has a collection of painting, sculpture, and architecture. Carnegie Hall is famous as a great centre of music. The American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art are of great interest for visitors.
7. Central Park in Uptown Manhattan is a favourite place of New Yorkers. The park has playgrounds and tennis courts. There are many educational establishments, for example Columbia University. The Metropolitan Opera, the New York State Theatre are known all over the world.
8. In conclusion we should say some words about the streets of the city. Park Avenue is famous for its large and expensive apartment houses. Seventh Avenue is the centre of the women’s fashion industry. Madison Avenue is the centre of advertizing industry. The most fashionable street is Fifth Avenue. It is a symbol of wealth, elegance and fashion of the country.
9. The word “Broadway” means American theatre. It has brilliant illuminations at night. It is also famous for its nightclubs, cafes, restaurants, hotels and shops.
