1. The majority of Americans – about 85 per cent – are neither wealthy nor poor. They belong to the broad economic category considered to be “middle class”. Middle class people ordinary live comfortably, own cars, spend some time each year on holiday and can pay for a university education for their children. Economically above this middle class are some very wealthy people; below the middle class are the poor.
2. Most Americans are troubled by the fact that the poverty exists in their land. The U.S. is known for its wealth, its abundance of food and its opportunity for all to build a good life. The goal is to operate a free enterprise economy in which everyone can find a job at which he or she can earn enough money to live comfortably. Despite that goal, there is always a percentage of people who want to work but who cannot find employment for which they are suited. The percentage of the population unemployed varies with the national economic situation.
3. In addition to federal programs, there are programs in each state, which are designed to help people in need. Among the many programs that help people living in poverty are welfare payments – sums of money which are given to those whose income is too low to provide necessities such as food, clothing and shelter; surplus food programs, under which food is purchased in huge qualities by the government and distributed free to the poor.
4. There are many other government programs that provide help to people. The Social Security program remains the largest. It is financed by a tax paid by all working people. This money is used when people reach retirement age or if, for example, a worker becomes disabled and cannot work. Older Americans are also eligible for medical and hospital care under a federal government program called Medicare. Although this program does not pay all medical expenses, it does help a great deal.

1. The British government’s economic policy is set in the context of a medium term financial strategy which is revived each year. The government ensures sustainable economic growth through low inflation and public finances. Within this strategy, monetary and fiscal policies are designed to defeat inflation.
2. Private enterprises generate over three-quarters of total domestic income in Britain. Since 1979 the Government has privatized 46 major business and reduced the state-owned sector of industry by about two-thirds. The government is taking measures to cut unnecessary regulations imposed on business, and runs a number of schemes which provide direct assistance or advice to small and medium-sized businesses.

In some sectors a small number of large companies and their subsidiaries are responsible for a substantial proportion of total production, notably in the vehicle, aerospace and transport equipment industries. Private enterprises account for the greater part of activity in the agricultural, manufacturing, construction, distributive, financial and miscellaneous service sectors. The private sector contributes 75% of total domestic final expenditure, general government 24% and public corporations 1%.
4. About 250 British industrial companies in the latest reporting period each had an annual turnover of more than £ 500 million. The annual turnover of the biggest company, British Petroleum, makes it the 11th largest industrial grouping in the world and the second largest in Europe. Five British firms are among the top 25 European Community companies.
