The English language
English is the most popular language in the world. Nowadays it hasbecome the world’s most important language in politics, science, industry, education, culture, sport,radio, diplomacy, etc. In a number of speakers (400 million) it is second only to Chinese.
English is the official language in at least seventy-five countries with a total population of over two billion. English is spoken as a native language by around 375 million and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. According to the statistics, about 750 million people speak English as a foreign language. One out of every four persons of the world’s population speaks English to some level of competence.

Over two-thirds of the world’s scientists read in English. Three quarters of the world’s mail is written in English. Eighty per cent of the world’s electronically stored information is in English. Half of all business deals are conducted in English. Two thirds of all scientific papers are written in English.Most international tourism, aviation and diplomacy are conducted in English.
The main language used throughout the world on the Internet is also English. Some eighty per cent of people communicate in English online. Four factors explain the use of English on the Internet:
1. The number of users of the language.
2. The extent of its use as an official language.
3. The economic power of the language.
4. The volume of information disseminated in that language.
Today, English reigns supreme in all four respects. English is the language most often studied as a foreign language in the European Union.
Among some non-English speaking EU countries, a large percentage of the adult population can speak English – in particular: 85% in Sweden, 83% in Denmark, 79% in the Netherlands, and over 50% in Finland, Slovenia, Austria, Belgium, and Germany.
Books, magazines and newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the world.
Modern English contains a very large vocabulary. The Oxford English Dictionary lists over 250,000 words.
