Canada occupies the largest part of the North American continent except Alaska. Its total land area of more than 9 million square kilometers makes it the second largest country in the world. The population is more than 31 million people. The capital of Canada is Ottawa.
Canada is a federation of 10 provinces and 2 northern territories. The federal Parliament consists of the House of Commons (Палата общин) and the Senate. The leader of the party that has the majority in the House of Commons forms the government. The civil law follows English common law everywhere except Quebec, where it follows the Napoleonic Code.
Canada has become a cultural mosaic in which immigrant groups retain much of their ethnic culture. There are two official languages in Canada: English and French. They have an equal status, rights and privileges in all governmental institutions. The culture of the English-speaking Canadian is a blend of British and American influences; the culture of the French-speaking people blends French and American influences. In general, the way of life, family structure, cuisine (кухня), and dress are closer to those of the United States than to those of Britain or France.
Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and the second city in Canada. Toronto is the Indian word for “meeting place”. The University of Toronto with its colleges is the largest in Canada and is famous for its high academic reputation.
Canada is the world leader in the production of asbestos, nickel and other metals and chemicals. The country is among the world’s leading wheat producers and is second in its export.

LEONARDO DA VINCI
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (April 15, 1452 - May 2, 1519) was an Italian scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance man. He is widely considered to be one of the most talented person ever to have lived.
Born the illegitimate son of a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, at Vinci in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the Florentine painter, Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice and spent his last years in France, at the home awarded to him by Francis I.
Leonardo is known as a painter. Two of his works, the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, are the most famous, most reproduced and the most parodied portrait and religious painting of all time, respectively, their fame approached only by Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam.
Leonardo’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on everything from the Euro to textbooks to t-shirts. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings survive the small number due to his constant, and frequently disastrous, experimentation with new techniques. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawing, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, comprise a contribution to later generations of artists only rivaled by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo. He conceptualized a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power and a calculator.
