THE REGION AT-A-GLANCE
The geographic region of the Middle East and North Africa
MENA is an English-language acronym referring to the Middle East and North Africa region. An alternative term for the same group of countries is WANA (West Asia and North Africa). The term covers an extensive region stretching from Morocco to Iran, including all Mashriq and Maghreb countries. This toponym is roughly synonymous with the term the Greater Middle East.
The population of the MENA region at its least extent is estimated to be about 381 million. This constitutes about 6% of the total world population. The MENA acronym is often used in academia, military planning, disaster relief, media planning as a broadcast region, and business writing.
Due to the geographic ambiguity and Eurocentric nature of the term "Middle East", some people prefer use of the terms Arab World, WANA (West Asia and North Africa) or the less common NAWA (North Africa-West Asia).[ Both the Arab world and MENA region remain the most common terms and are used by most organizations, academia, and political entities flexibly, including those in the region itself.

Economic outlook
Economic growth in MENA is expected to rebound to an average 2.0 percent in 2018 from an average 1.4 percent in 2017. The mild rebound in regional growth reflects the positive impact of reforms and stabilization policies undertaken in many countries in tandem with the recent pick up in oil prices and external oil demand. Economic growth in the MENA region is forecast to improve modestly, reaching an average of 2.6 percent in 2019-2020. Oil exporters will significantly benefit from higher oil prices and external oil demand that will likely remain high, as well as domestic reforms. Oil importers are expected to benefit from reforms, rising trade with the Europe and China, and financial inflows from MENA oil exporters.
While overall growth appears robust, the pace of the economic recovery in the region is still sluggish. Challenges – including the slow pace of reforms, a temptation to return to pro-cyclical fiscal policies in the wake of higher oil prices, rising debt levels, and high unemployment rates among youth and women – still exist and, if not addressed, could deter economic recovery and hamper long-term growth prospects in the region.

Большо й Ближний Восток — политический и географический термин, используемый с 1980 года. Помимо традиционных арабских стран Ближнего Востока включает в себя так же Иран, Турцию, Афганистан, Пакистан, Туркменистан, Кавказ и ещё ряд мусульманских стран центрально-восточного района, а также традиционно мусульманские страны северной Африки и Израиль.

Он изложил в общих чертах плоды многолетних разработок ведущих израильских экономистов и ученых, осуществленных при поддержке американских и частично европейских институтов. Задачей данного проекта является создание сильного еврейского государства в сердце арабского мира и за счёт его ресурсов.
Программа "Новый Ближний Восток" представляет собой создание зоны свободной торговли на территориях, граничащих с Израилем, с последующим распространением на весь ближневосточный регион. Помимо развития торговых связей и ликвидации экономических и внеэкономических ограничений, предусматривается развитие полноценного экономического сотрудничества между странами-участницами в интересах сбалансированного развития и преодоления исключительно сырьевого участия в международном разделении труда.
Термин был призван заменить устаревшее и несколько навязшее понятие «Большой Ближний Восток».
