Задание 1 (макс – 4 балла)

Установите соответствие между заголовками A-E и текстами 1-4. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

A. We were offered a lot of entertainment by hospitable people of the country.

B. Summer journey is more enjoyable when you do what you want.

C. It’s a good idea to travel by plane because it’s very fast.

D. Going abroad can change your opinion about certain nations and countries.

E. It’s uneasy to organize the opportunity to study a foreign language.

1 We visited Spain in summer. The purpose of the trip was to study the art and architecture of the region, particularly the mediaeval Moorish influence. And, of course, to enjoy Spanish cuisine and people. We travelled without a guide, but well supplied with guidebooks, that allowed us to take our time and enjoy the country. Organizing all our own sightseeing and meals gave us considerable flexibility, and not being tied to a guide and a timetable turned out to be quite a bonus. Finally, we made our way back to the airport by train and bus. It was a highly successful trip in every way!

2 As we departed from Twickenham, having been on the exchange before I thought that there wouldn't be anything new to me, except the language perhaps. As I found out over the next week Russia always has new experiences to offer. The Russian host families were very kind and hospitable while we spent the weekend with our hosts, so we felt as if we were back at home — well, apart from having to speak Russian, obviously! Our guides had planned a range of excursions, including cultural, sporting and entertainment centres of the city.

3 Going to London was a fantastic experience as it is truly the most diverse city in the world. Apart from the usual tourist attractions there are plenty of other areas worth visiting. Also, I found the English people not to be as serious and reserved as I thought they would be. They were very friendly and good hosts. I agree that visiting any European capital is going to give a broad insight into the culture and London is no exception.

4 This year I decided to organize the work experience week in Italy and with a different company. Indeed, though the week in a foreign country had been a success every time, the main problem was in the evening as the students were all staying together and, therefore, speaking English. Trying to make them speak Italian to each other, after having spent the day at their work placement trying to understand, what was going on, was a very difficult task. This time I arranged their accommodation in different families.

Yesterday was a normal school day for Yumiko, a fourteen-year-old student at Higashi High School in Tokyo, Japan. At 6.15 am, while you were probably still asleep, Yumiko was getting ready for school. At 7.30 she left home and travelled for an hour by train to get to school.

Her first class started at 8.40. She had four lessons in the morning. There isn't a cafeteria or a canteen at Yumiko's school so, at 12.30, she stayed in her classroom with her classmates and ate her packed lunch. She had 50 minutes for lunch and then had two more classes. At 3 pm classes finished. Yumiko helped to tidy the classroom and after that she went to baseball club and practised for two hours. Every student in Japan goes to a sports club after school.

After baseball, Yumiko had a burger and then took a 30-minute train journey to a special school called a 'juku'. She stayed there for three hours, studying for her exams. Yumiko likes going to 'juku' because she says it's more fun than normal school, and more interesting. Her parents don't mind paying because they hope it will help her to get into a good university. Finally, Yumiko went home and did homework before she went to bed — at midnight. And you thought you had a hard life!

1. It takes Yumiko much time to get to school.

2. She usually has lunch at a school canteen.

3. All students in Japan go in for sport after school.

4. Yumiko's parents have to pay a lot of money for extra classes.

5. Yumiko does not like doing to ‘juku’.

6. Yumiko never does her homework.

Teenage fiction

Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?

Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, “Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been particularly successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they’re realizing that teenagers aren’t just older children but they’re not adult either and often aren’t interested in adult fiction. For this series we’re looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.”

Athene Gorr’s novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is “The purple ring”. She says, “The important thing is to persuade teenagers to pick up your book. I’m a new writer so, although I’ve got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what a brilliant story it is!”

And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said, “I’ve read a few books in the Waves series. They say they’re for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We’re not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children’s section, lots of teenagers won’t find them so they may not do very well. And it’s a shame there’s no non-fiction in the series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy that”.
