Можно сказать, что Past Perfect — это аналог Present Perfect, только для прошлого. Если в Present Perfect действие совершилось к настоящему моменту, то в Past Perfect — к некоторому моменту в прошлом.
Представьте себе, что вам нужно рассказать о каком-нибудь важном событии в вашей жизни. Когда вы станете описывать совершившиеся события, далеко не всегда ваш рассказ будет представлять собой четкую хронологию действий. Мы нередко начинаем повествование с одного события, потом описываем предшествующие и снова возвращаемся к более поздним действиям. В русском языке в таком рассказе мы используем только одно время, прошедшее, а вот англоязычный народ гораздо более логичен, поэтому для описания наиболее ранних действий в английском языке существует специальное время – Past Perfect.
