How to Write a Scientific Grant

Grant writing can seem like a daunting task, but with a little patience, research and hard work, it can be rewarding.

Scientific research projects require funding. Whether you are a pre-doctoral student pursuing an advanced degree or a seasoned investigator operating a large research facility, your research projects will cost varying sums of money. Grants provide funding for individuals, public entities and private companies that have good ideas for projects that could potentially benefit humanity. Federal agencies are generally the best place to seek grants for scientific research projects, but grants are also available through philanthropic foundations, state governments and private corporations. A thorough understanding of the grant-writing process will assist you in obtaining the funds you need.

How to Get Money for Scientific Research

Instructions

1. Develop a plan. Competition for grants can be stiff, and if your proposed research project isn't well thought out, you'll likely be denied. Develop a specific hypothesis, consider the equipment and personnel necessary to conduct your research, and prioritize the necessity of your project.

2. Research available funding. Grant-makers have their own priorities and objectives. Be sure that the goal of your proposed research project matches that of the grant for which you are applying.

3. Determine what needs to be included in your application. While every grant application is likely to require a cover letter, a detailed description of
the planned project and a proposed budget, individual grant-makers have different guidelines and specifications for grant applications. Adhering to thesis guidelines and specifications will be necessary in order to successfully obtain the grant.

4. Write the grant proposal. Be persuasive and prove that your research is worth conducting. Explain the problem that your project aims to solve and why your hypothesis is legitimate. Explain how your project will meet the goals of the grant-maker, and include a detailed plan for how you will achieve your objective.

5. Proofread your proposal. Ensure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors, that it is presented professionally and that you've adhered to all guidelines. Then, proofread your proposal again.

6. Submit your grant application. Address it to the correct person, put it in the mail, and be sure it will arrive by the deadline.
