Периодические информационные издания
По проблемам железнодорожного транспорта
Журнал – периодическое издание, содержащее тематические статьи и иллюстрации и адресованное определенной читательской аудитории.
По характеру публикуемой информации журналы могут быть научные, научно-технические, научно-популярные, производственно-технические, технико-экономические и т.п., информационного, обзорного, узкоспециального назначения.
Журналы могут издаваться отдельными организациями одной страны или ряда стран. В последнем случае это международные журналы.
В особую группу выделяют реферативные журналы (РЖ), в которых публикуются рефераты статей, аннотации и библиографические описания, составленные на научные документы из периодических и продолжающихся изданий, трудов конференций, на книги, картографические издания, диссертационные работы, патентные и нормативные документы, депонированные научные работы и др.
Например, РЖ Железнодорожный транспорт, издаваемый Всероссийским институтом научной и технической информации Российской Академии Наук (ВИНИТИ РАН), знакомит специалистов с основными вопросами, касающимися исследований и разработок в области строительства железных дорог, пути и путевого хозяйства, эксплуатации железных дорог, локомотивостроения и вагоностроения, технической эксплуатации подвижного состава и тяги поездов, автоматики, телемеханики и связи на железнодорожном транспорте и др.
Среди зарубежных периодических и продолжающихся изданий по проблемам железнодорожного транспорта, которые выходят на английском языке и издаются в Великобритании (Great Britain), США (the USA), Японии (Japan) и ряде других стран, следует назвать журналы: Railway Gazette International (RG), Railway Age (RA), International Railway Journal (IRJ), Rail Engineering International (REI). Этот перечень можно продолжить.
Структура журналов
Журналы выходят еженедельно, раз или два раза в месяц, некоторые – один раз в квартал.
Номера журналов за один год объединены в том. Нумерация страниц в журналах может быть традиционная или сквозная от первого до последнего номера ежегодного тома. Номер тома в зарубежных изданиях указывает на то, как долго это издание существует, и позволяет определить, с какого года оно выходит.
Титульный лист журнала несет информацию о названии, № тома, месяце, годе, периодичности издания.
Далее приводится Оглавление. В оглавлении иногда рядом с названием статьи и указанием страницы приводят ключевые фразы из содержания статьи. Это делается для того, чтобы еще на стадии просмотра оглавления заинтересовать читателя, привлечь его внимание к проблемам, освещаемым в статье.
В качестве иллюстрации приведем страницу с оглавлением из журнала International Railway Journal за сентябрь 2012 года.

Exercise 8
Look for a technical magazine that deals with your speciality. The periodical could be in Russian if you can’t find an English one.
| 1. | Study thoroughly a magazine you’ve taken: its title, volume number, the date and the place of its publication. |
| 2. | Study the structure of the periodical to find out its traditional Departments. |
| 3. | Look for more details about the magazine, for example, its history, the Editorial Team, etc. |
| 4. | Look through the Contents of your magazine. Quote some titles of the articles published in the magazine. |
| 5. | Say whether the issue contains any article concerning your speciality – an electrical engineer. |
| 6. | Prove that the article deals with railway electrification problems or electric rolling stock questions. Mind technical abbreviations, names of railways, companies, designation of electric motive power units, technical parameters of current systems. Examine schemes, diagrams, photos, etc. |

Exercise 9
Write a review of a technical magazine under discussion, as if you were a member of its Editorial Team. To make your magazine review more substantial use the clichés given below.
Some Useful Clichés for Reviewing a Technical Magazine
