PREFACE
The present book focuses on a significant area of the normative English grammar that concerns the verb as a part of speech with specific morphological categories, typical usage and patterns.
The chapters of the Exercises are logically ordered so as to provide a systematic overview of the English verb grammar.
The book opens with a block of practical tasks on the finite forms of the verb (Unuchek, Kate), including separate chapters on the active and the passive voice forms (Karelina, Alina) and a chapter on indirect speech and the sequence of tenses (Timchenko, Viktoriia). Two chapters are allotted to the tasks on the subjunctive mood forms (Pshenichnikova, Anna) and modal verb patterns (Yung, Anna). The final part of the Exercises deals with the non-finite forms of the verb (Sheveleva, Alla). The chapters on the infinitive, the gerund, and the participle present training tasks for practicing typical patterns associated with the non-finite forms.
All chapters include focused practice tasks and revision tasks. Areas of particular difficulty are paid special attention to.
The last chapter of the Exercises supplies the keys.
The Exercises are based on fundamental studies in the English grammar, done by well-known foreign and domestic linguists. The material of the book has been used in teaching students of the Far Eastern Federal University, and thus has been put to the test of practical work. The Exercises provide a wide range of tasks, based on the authors’ test assignments, credit and examination materials.
The book will be of interest to students of English as a second or foreign language who wish to improve their knowledge of the verb grammar and achieve a greater command of the English language in general. The Exercises are intended for students at intermediate and high-intermediate levels. The authors also hope that more advanced learners specializing in the English language will find the book useful. As it covers most critical areas of the English verb usage and offers a variety of practical grammar tasks, the book might serve as an effective resource for students’ self-study activities.

The Exercises provide training in the English grammar and help students to develop skills of grammatically correct written and oral speech.
The authors wish to thank their fellow teachers of the School of Regional and International Studies of the Far Eastern Federal University and especially the head of the Chair of Linguistics and Intercultural Communication Lovtsevich, Galina for their assistance in the preparation of this book.
