Customer: I would like to get some clothes for winter.
Shop assistant: What exactly would you like to buy?
Customer: Winter trainers, an anorak, and a sweater.
Shop assistant: What are your sizes?
Customer: My footwear size is 42, a clothing size – 48, growth – 180 cm.
Shop assistant: Well, I will try to help you.
Customer: Could you tell me, what is fashionable in this season?
Shop assistant: I think this anorak matches this sweater. They are the latest trend in clothes. Besides, they suit you!
Customer: How much does it cost?
Shop assistant: Are you going to pay by card or in cash? There is a discount for Visa Gold card holders.
Customer: Of course, I am paying by card!
Shop assistant: Your purchase is 12,000 roubles. Thank you!
2. The teacher: Good morning, students!
A class: Good morning, Mr. Brown!
The teacher: Today I am going to tell you about biology. Have you ever heard of this subject?
Jane: Yes, my mother has told me a lot of times that I will be as poor as a teacher of biology if I do not study hard!
The teacher: I am not sure that your mother is right… I am not so poor and my teachers assessed my progress giving me only good grades!
Johnny: And my father said to me that it is better to do real work than study insects as all biologists do!
The teacher: Do you all agree that biology is the study of insects?
A class: We do not know!
The teacher: Actually, biology is the study of particular types of animals.
A class: All animals?
The teacher: Yes, all living creatures that are not people or plants.
A class: Shall we go to the Zoo?
The teacher: Of course, from time to time our classes will not be given in the classroom. I am going to take you to the Zoo, to the City Park, and to the Oceanarium.
Johnny: When I come home, I will tell my father that biology is an interesting subject.
The teacher: You may invite your father to our classes. I will be glad if your parents assist me to keep an eye on you.
A class: Thank you, Mr. Brown!
3. Helen: Where are you from, Alec?
Alec: From Australia. What about you Helen?
Helen: I'm from Paris, the capital of France.
Alec: Oh, I have read a lot about French cheeses and wines. I heard you sang a song from the movie Les Parapluies de Cherbourg at the concert. You are very fond of your native country, aren't you?
Helen: Yes, I am. I adore it. I am always dreaming about going back to my native lands. Very often I am home-sick.
Alec: When did you visit your family last?
Helen: A year ago. But I keep up a regular correspondence with them. Mother and sisters are missing me terribly, so am I.
Alec: I would like you to tell me something about Paris. When I go to Paris, I would like to visit some quiet and calm places, not the common places of interest.
Helen: With pleasure, but not at this moment. Now I am in a hurry. Tonight I'm going to the theatre.
Alec: Well, I wish you to have a good time! Hope to see you tomorrow.

Helen: So long, Alec. Drop in tomorrow evening if you have time.
4. Brad: You are fond of music, aren't you?
Emmy: Yes. I am. I am not very good at signing but I try to listen to jazz and to read interesting books about cinematography.
Brad: What about Louis Armstrong and Pat Britt? Don't you think that they have very much in common?
Emmy: Pat Britt?
Brad: Do you want to say that you don’t know about him?
Emmy: Ah, you are speaking about jazz saxophonist and flutist!
Brad: That's exactly what I mean. But he is also a producer! He shot the film Louis Armstrong: 100th Anniversary. Their talents match. Do you agree with me?
Emmy: I have never thought about it. Louis Armstrong was really a very gifted person. It is a pity that he lived and performed in the previous century. Have you heard his music?
Brad: Yes. I have heard all his songs. They give much food for thought.
Emmy: I believe that each of his songs can be heard a lot of times.
Brad: I agree with you here. The more you hear such music the better you understand it. Pat Britt included into the film both well-known and rare fragments of interviews with a star. Do you know that?
Emmy: Really?
Brad: I am happy to inform you that I have a CD with this film!
5. Martin: Barbara, I am happy to see you! You look great, as usual. How was the party?
Barbara: Really good. I was really enjoying it!
Martin: Did you have a talk with Catherine? She was going to invite you to the Museum of Modern Art.
Barbara: I agreed to go with her. I have already been there, but I did not have enough time to see it all.
Martin: Could I join you?
Barbara: Of course! After it we are going to my favorite coffee shop. Last time we had a nice time there: we laughed a lot! The only problem was that Catherine is very talkative. She is talking all the time and I just listen.
Martin: Yes, she has told me that her grandmother had a phobia of dogs.
Barbara: I know that Catherine had always wanted to take a little puppy but she could not until their granny lived with them.
Martin: And now?
Barbara: Her grandmother got married two years ago and moved to Australia. She lives on a ranch and she has lost her phobia. She has had a special treatment for it.
Martin: I hope Catherine will not tell us about the treatment?
Barbara: I think this time we will be speaking about her new job. She does not like it.
Martin: I am really looking forward to our meeting!
