Dear Chris,
Thanks for your letter asking me to write to you. I like writing letters and I’ve already got a pen friend, Harry, in Canada and one in Finland, called Anya. I’m going to Finland for a holiday next summer and I’m going to stay with Anya in Helsinki. We’ve written to each other for four year but we’ve never met.
Like you, I’m seventeen years old. I’ve got two brothers. They’re twins and they’re nine years old. We usually get on well but sometimes they really annoy me. My father works in a bank and my mother is a housewife. My grandmother also lives with us. We have an old house with a big garden. Please tell my something about your family and where you live.
I go to a college in the neighbouring town. It’s a large, modern building. The classes start at 8.30 a.m. and finish at 3.30 p.m. My favourite subjects are Maths and Computer Science. I hate History! We’ve got exams next month and I’m not looking forward to them! I belong to the college drama club. We meet on Fridays after classes. What’s your college like? What are your favourite subjects?

In my spare time I go sailing. My father has a small yacht and we often spend the weekend on the boat. I also like swimming and watching horror films. What are your hobbies?
Well, that’s enough for now. Please write soon.
Love from,
Kim

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in Croatia, which was then part of the Austo-Hungarian Empire. Tesla studied at the Realschule, the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria and the University of Prague. At first, he intended to specialize in physics and mathematics, but soon he became fascinated with electricity.
His career as an electrical engineer began when he walked with a friend through the city park after seeing a telephone company in Budapest in 1881. Once when Tesla was at the demonstration of the "Gramme dynamo" (a machine that when operated in one direction is a generator, and when reversed is an electric motor), he visualized a rotating magnetic field. With a stick, he drew a diagram in the sand explaining to his friend the principle of the induction motor. Before going to America, Tesla joined Continental Edison Company in Paris where he designed dynamos. While in Strasbourg in 1883, he privately built a prototype of the induction motor and ran it successfully. Unable to interest anyone in Europe in promoting this radical device, Tesla accepted an offer to work for Thomas Edison in New York. His childhood dream was to come to America to harness the power of Niagara Falls.
