I was ashamed of my condition, because I had horrible red oozing sores all over my face and body, he raised his hand to bless me. Later on, I was staying with Syamarani Didi, and I told her about how I held her Manjari painting all day and night, and felt like this Manjari had saved me. She said "oh which Manjari?" So I pulled out the photo from my songbook and showed her. "Ah, she said, go and ask Gurudeva who this is". So later that day I showed Gurudeva this photo and I asked him "oh Gurudeva, Syamarani didi said I should ask you who this Manjari is", I said showing him the photo of this Manjari. "Go and ask Syamarani who this is, she will tell you" he replied with a smiling face. So I went back to Syamarani didi and said to her "Gurudeva said I should ask you who this is and that you would tell me". She laughed and said "oh he is so tricky, he should tell you! She said who do you think it is?" "I think it is Rupa Manjari" I replied. "Go and ask him again" she insisted.

So again I approached Gurudeva a little afraid "Gurudeva, Syamarani will not say who this Manjari is, can you please tell me?" I said. "No!" he said with a smile on his face "I will not say".

So again I went back to see Syamarani didi, now wondering if I would ever find out who this Sakhi was, "She is your Guru Sakhi" she revealed. "Guru Sakhi?" I asked, "what is that?" As I had never heard of this term Guru Sakhi. "Your own Gurudeva as a Manjari (Maid-servant of the Goddess - Sri Radha) she replied, "her name is Raman Manjari" she revealed to me.

This was how I first came about learning who this lovely Manjari was who held me in her safe embrace throughout that week when I could so easily have died. Indeed Gurudeva was right when he said "you were not alone I was with you the entire time".

Gurudeva may not be physically present before us at this time, but he is always with us. He promised this. He said he would never leave us or abandon us. "But you should try to follow".

Suchandra Dasi SO SWEET!

Suchandra Dasi My mother took her THakurji to get pran pratistha from Srila Gurudev in Oahu. It was a Radha, Krsna and two gopis. We thought that the gopi with her hands in serving position, was sweeter than the one supposed to be Radharani. So we had them switched. After the ceremony was complete, and we had darshan of Them for the first time, we saw that Srila Gurudev made the original Radha to be our Radharani. We were so surprised because She became SO beautiful and prominent, so much so, that She stole the show from Krsna, Who used to really be the Center of attention! So we were amazed and super happy but then my mother asked, "Who are the two gopis?" Sripad Madhava Maharaj said something like....oh Lalita and Vishakha or anyone.....waving his hands in the air as if to say it doesn't matter. Mother tried to get a clear answer from Gurudev but I never heard if she did. Now gurudev is gone and mother passed away, and I have her Deities. I SO much like this gopi with her hands in serving position. But I wanted to know who they were for so long. I also always loved that gopi in the picture with the blue dress, but I never paid attention when people would mention who they were. Now, by reading and searching, I have come to the conclusion that it is "Guru Sakhi" and The other with the Chamara, is Rupa! This is what my heart feels.

Krishna Rose So sweet didi! So lovely that Gurudeva brough Srimatiji from the spiritual world into your Thakurji's, you are so fortunate and so blessed... to have had a Guru like this, and a mother like that......Yes Rupa and Rati are flanking Srimatiji, and Raman is on the right in the blue dress, the Manjari on the left is Param Gurudeva as Vinod Manjari.

Krishna Rose Gurudeva is so sweet and so amazing. He loved your family so much! I remember how affectionate he was with you, especially you and your sweet sister.... you are both such shining Sakhi's in the making, I'm sure you will not have too long to wait before you reach the beautiful land of Vraj and meet these Sakhi's face to face..... of this I am certain! Love you sister...... both of you... so much.

Candrakanta Dasi Love you too... I feel so lucky right now that I helped babysit nayana so long ago. Haha idk why it keeps coming to mind. I guess because back then I didn't really know how senior and special you were.

I feel sad that no one was there looking after you while you were sick but yes, Srila Gurudev was there himself. That's what makes it so special. Sometimes we must go they these heavy purifications just with Guru and Krsna.

I wish you were near and we could sing bhajans and Mahamantra and songs together.

Gurudeva memories - One time when we were on tour with Gurudeva in 1996, we went to Los Angeles, CA. It was Gurudeva's first time in America, coming out of India.

Gurudeva wanted to take the foot dust of Srila Prabhupada, and requested to go to the LA ISKCON Temple, to visit the place where Srila Prabhupada spent so many years living and writing. Srila Prabhupada was very close life long friends with our Gurudeva. It was my Gurudeva, who lived with Srila Prabhupada before he took Sannyasa, and encouraged him to take Sannyasa, even begging his Guru (our Param Gurudeva) - Bhaktiprajnana Keshava Goswami Maharaj to give Prabhupada Sannyasa - which of course did happen. It was Prabhupada who called Gurudeva to his side when was leaving this world, and asked him to "please help my disciples, they are like monkeys". Gurudeva, genuinely always gave so much honor and respect to Srila Prabhupada saying to everyone "he is my SIKSHA Guru, he ordered to me to help his followers, this why I have come, to give strength to those who have lost inspiration to follow strictly".

We arrived at the LA Temple, and went into the temple room to take Darshan, and wanted also to see the rooms where Srila Prabhupada lived upstairs. After some time there was a commotion outside.

When we walked outside to walk around to the side of the building to go visit Srila prabhupada's rooms, there was a police officer standing there, with the LA Temple President. The police man said to Gurudeva "they have phoned me to come and remove you from this property, they say you are causing a disturbance". Gurudeva said in a very sweet voice "I am just an old man, I have no possessions, I have come here from India for the first time ever, to this country, to see where my spiritual teacher lived and preached, that is all". The police man said to the temple president "he looks harmless to me". The Temple President said "he is here to cause a disturbance". The police man said to Gurudeva "are you going to cause any disturbance?". Gurudeva said to him "I have not come to cause anyone difficulty, I am a traveling monk, I only wanted to come to the temple my Guru lived in to see where he spent so many days writing and living. They let all kinds of people come into the temple, but me, they don't want, because they think I am dangerous. I am dangerous because I bring a storehouse of love with me".

The police man smiled at Gurudeva and there was a sweet exchange, before the police man left feeling confident that everything was okay. We left pretty quickly after this incident, it was horrible to stand by and watch Gurudeva be treated in this manner.

All kinds of people are allowed to go into the temple to see the Deities and take prashadam (eat), but here they were banning Gurudeva, and all of us, from entering. We were not even allowed to eat in the restaurant while we visited LA (not Gurudeva - but all of us followers). Gurudeva told us "do not take their prasad, Srila Prabhupada and the Deities are not accepting their offerings, because of their offenses".

Syamarani (Jadurani - who is one of Srila Prabhupada's first and foremost disciples) later that day told us "Srimati Radhika doesn't go anywhere without Gurudeva at Her side, he is so powerful, he can create and destroy universes with a glance".

Mañjarī Dāsī I think at the end you meant that "Srimati Radhika doesn't go anywhere without* Srila Gurudeva by her side"... oh Jaya Srila Gurudeva <3...How merciful that Gurudeva continued to come back to the West for so many years without stopping after these terrible incidents.... wow.

Krishna Rose Some devotee's are trying to say that this incident never happened, I was there next to Srila Gurudeva when this happened, there is no reason why I would make this up, or mix it up with any other experience, it's not exactly something one easily mixes up - when someone calls the police on your Guru! I remember it clear as day, as if it happened yesterday... so to those devotee's who are saying otherwise, I say this "you must not have been there when it happened, because 100% it did happen, I saw it with these eyes and heard it with these ears, I was next to Gurudeva the entire time this exchange happened, and my heart broke". Sorry, just felt the need to speak up against people trying to say this didn't happen when it did. Bless you for putting up with my ranting :)

Gaurangi Dasi Sometimes people believe what they like, rather then what really happened. Srila Prabhupada said "who wants to be cheated, will be cheated". I have heard nice things in ISKCON about Srila BV Narayan Maharaj before 1995, but after that no. Mukunda Godvami was taking Iskcon people to Srila Gurudeva after departure of Srila Prabhupada. Srila Gurudeva helped to ISKCON.

Krishna Rose Mukunda Goswami was a good friend of mine from London, before I met Gurudeva, when I met Gurudeva and became his disciple, I wrote to Mukunda to tell him how grateful I was for all his support and inspiration over the years, about how now I feel so grateful to have the shelter of pure Vaisnava Guru, etc, very sweet letter - he was upset with me for going to Gurudeva. When I lived in the Soho Street temple, ISKCON, I was writing letters
back and forth to Gurudeva, it was 1993, 1994, and the little handwritten letters from Gurudeva were coming in my cubby box, and the TP of the temple called me in and said "You cannot get letters from him here". I said "why?" They said "because ISKCON has banned him, and you are living here, and you cannot get letters from him here". I left the temple the next day and moved out, what a small minded micro-managing mentality! I was so upset over it, I didn't even know there was a problem with Gurudeva, his books were so sweet, his letters so sweet.... then I left and went to Gurudeva.... :)

Gaurangi Dasi Very nice. Determent and sincere. Yes, Gurudeva is so sweet. I decide to go to Him when my ISKCON guru fall down in 1998., but couldnt get in contact until 2002. In 2003 got harinama by phone. Srila Gurudeva told me "See you in India". And gives me name which i loved the most, although my karmi name was on J, spelling like Y in English.
I met Srila Gurudeva for the first time in Haridwar, 2007.

Continuation of a thread from my Gurudeva memories: When I posted the memory of visiting the Bhaktivedanta Manor with Gurudeva in 1996, I received a very open and humble sweet response from Damodara Dasa, who was Temple President at the Manor at that time. He wrote this very humble and honest letter, regarding the difficult situation he was put in when Gurudeva visited the ISKCON Temple. The letter describes an incident when, after Guru Puja, Gurudeva was shown to Srila Prabhupada's personal rooms upstairs, where he wrote and lived for quite a long time. Gurudeva was recounting some of his memories of Prabhupada. When he asked for a chair, he was refused, (read why below), and we were all so hurt and offended.... this letter below explains it all clearly, why these things happened, and Damodara in his humility apologized for this incident, as it never sat right in his conscience, even all these years later. I became so happy to read his letter, this is real progress between Vaisnava's. I could never understand how, any 'branch' of this faith, could cut off another branch of it's own faith, and create such hate and enmity for one group of people, as ISKCON did for Gurudeva and his followers over the years. It has a been a slow and painful process for us all. We are all one family, of the same faith, aspiring for the same goal, even having the same process to attain that goal, yet this split within our Hare Krishna movement, has shown that we are not behaving as loving compassionate advanced devotee's on a path of love, but rather more like immature angry criticizing fools. I really hope this is the first of many letters that come to us, and to Gurudeva, by way of an apology for the way in which he was treated, and the way all of us, his daughters and sons, have been treated over the years. Please read his letter below.

Dear Krsna Vallabha (Krishna Rose) and assembled Prabhus,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Sri Sri Guru and Gauranga.

A friend of mine, Lalit Kishore Prabhu, brought this thread to my attention recently. I was grateful that he did so - for several reasons. Amongst other things, I have learned about some events that I had no previously knowledge of, some that are quite shocking and natural causes for grievance for anyone who has any appreciation for sadhus. More on that below. I was dismayed to see the characterisation of myself and others at Bhaktivedanta Manor during Narayana Maharaja's visit - particularly because there are a number of significant inaccuracies.

Personally I have considerable affection for many devotees in Narayana Maharaja's sanga - including close friends and family members - and would not wish to see those relationships disrupted (again, particularly on the basis of inaccurate information or possibly jaded views, attribution of motives, etc.)

I was troubled to hear what Narayana Maharaja and many of his followers actually did have to endure - and empathise accordingly with their grievances. And am hoping that even now, 20 years or so later, I may be able to contribute somewhat to the healing process.

I am a passionate participant in Srila Prabhupada's movement. I am fully aware of ISKCON's many challenges and am constructively committed to its ongoing evolution - including the addressing many shortfalls where it is yet to live up to the expectations that Srila Prabhupada had for it.

It is precisely with such reasoning that I served as a TP in several different temples between 1991-1998 including Bhaktivedanta Manor during Sripad Narayana Maharaja's visit. I served with all the sincerity and enthusiasm that I could summon as a young neophyte devotee. I would have been about 29 years old at that time - practising Krsna consciousness for perhaps 13 of them.

It was with great dismay when I first heard about the GBC resolutions concerning ISKCON devotees' mixing with Narayana Maharaja. I wondered if such "hard line sanctions" (as I saw them) were absolutely necessary. I wondered if we were perhaps again heading for some of the unpleasantness that had surrounded ISKCON's relationship with Sripad Sridhara Maharaja. Had we really exhausted all other options before resorting to a "ban"? I have never been a fan of "bans" though recognise that, in extreme situations, when all other options have been exhausted, there may be occasionally a necessity.

The GBC issued written directions to all the temple presidents when it was learned that Narayana Maharaja would be heading out on a world tour. I gather that England - and Bhaktivedanta Manor - was perhaps the first stop on this tour. As such, whilst feelings were no doubt still raw (following the GBC sanctions) and without a clear sense of how Maharaja's visit would play out, I suddenly found myself unwittingly as his first ISKCON host (post-restrictions). To say I felt wary and uncomfortable - not about Maharaja's visit per se (as I had met him on two previous occasions and enjoyed affectionate exchanges) but about how the inter-institutional dynamics might play out - would be a massive understatement.

The GBC directions were along the following lines:-
- please invite Maharaja to visit and afford him all welcome and respect
- if possible, seek to arrange the timing of the visit to be at a non-peak time

(I guess that there may be different takes on the intention behind that second "bullet". My sense is that it was intended to limit the potential for any inflammatory tensions between the followers of the two institutions. Others may feel that it was designed to limit the number of people exposed to Narayana Maharaja)

- under no circumstances should Maharaja be invited to make any formal address nor offered a seat in a public forum which might constitute tacitly such an invitation (and apparent institutional endorsement)

I recall agonising over how to fulfil the third bullet without causing any offense. Even an ordinary guest is to be offered a seat, some water and kind words - even an enemy who visits one's house - what to speak of a sadhu. After discussions with Sivarama Swami - who was not present in the UK at that time - and the temple council, we decided that we would invite Atma Nivedana Maharaja - the only sannyasi in the UK at that time - to take Narayana Maharaja on a tour of the Manor (Srila Prabhupada's rooms, the goshala, etc). That way no seat would be needed, no tension around a public address, etc. Everything could be warm and affectionate.

As per the GBC direction, upon hearing of Maharaja'a arrival in the UK, I called a devotee called Brajnath to see if we could plan Maharaja's visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor. He more or less chastised me for thinking that it was in any way appropriate to seek to limit Maharaja's freedoms by agreeing any such time.

I found his tone exceptionally hostile. I felt that I was being punished as a representative of an institution that, from his perspective, had offended his Guru Maharaja.

As such, I had no sense of when Maharaja would arrive.

I have no recollection of attending any earlier welcome ceremony, observing or reporting any footbathing, etc. The first I knew of Maharaja's arrival at Bhaktivedanta Manor was when he and his entourage entered the temple room just prior to greeting Sri-Sri Radha-Gokulananda at 7am.

Interestingly, my recollection of the event prior to seeing the video footage on this thread and elsewhere on You Tube is that Maharaja had arrived during the Greeting of the Deities but the video evidence clearly shows otherwise. I hope that I am not the only one who would admit that, after 20 years, some of the details might in fact be a little different than how they remembered them.

I knew nothing of Maharaja and his entourage being shown to a side room - which from the video footage - appears to be the temple library - until it was mentioned here. I knew nothing of any locked door. No such instructions had been given to anyone. I am as shocked as all of you that someone would do something like this. They certainly weren't acting on my behalf nor anyone in the temple management to my knowledge nor the GBC. I fully understand the outrage around this treatment of Maharaja and his entourage.

He certainly did not miss Guru Puja.

As the video record shows, Maharaja was welcomed and accommodated with all affection and respect. You can see several of my dealings with him on the video footage.

Was there tension? Palpably. And my sense is that it flowed from the followers of both institutions towards each other. No one was any more guilty than anyone else. I didn't even take it personally. I understood why Maharaja's followers would feel as they did. And I knew that the restrictions that I was obliged to uphold were not of my design.

There were no GBC sannyasis flanking Maharaja, quaking in their boots. Atma Nivedana Maharaja was the only sannyasi in the UK at that time otherwise, as a relatively junior sannyasi, he would not have been the first choice tour guide and host for Maharaja. I would have also taken back seat to such elders had any been there. Trust me when I say that I did not want to be a front man during a delicate time such as this.

The video reveals that Atma Nivedana Maharaja arrives after the tour has already reached the landing outside of Srila Prabhupada's rooms. You can hear me asking the throng to make way for him.

The tour was never intended to facilitate a large crowd. As such, when in the course of the tour of Srila Prabhupada's rooms, Narayana Maharaja began recounting his memories of time with Srila Prabhupada, understandably his followers wanted to offer him a seat and, interestingly, asked me to fetch one. Now I was faced with the very challenge I had hoped to sidestep by arranging for the tour - either disobeying the GBC and offering Maharaja a seat which would have, in essence, conveyed a tacit endorsement of hearing from Maharaja by a local ISKCON authority in contravention of the GBC mandate, or risking offending Maharaja. I said that it was not possible for me to offer Maharaja a seat - believing that this, ultimately, would be the expectation of my immediate ISKCON authorities (which included my spiritual master). There was no intention on my part to disrespect Maharaja. I certainly didn't feel good about being in that position. Had there been no crowd, I would not have hesitated as the issue with a perceived endorsement would not have come up. I see the tensions that resulted from this particular event as entirely the consequence of Brajnath's preference for an adversarial response when I sought to collaborate and plan Maharaja's visit together.

I earlier used the word "interesting" because had others brought a chair for Maharaja, I would not have intervened. And there were many local devotees amongst Narayana Maharaja's followers who might have exercised this initiative or prerogative. But their asking me to do do carried an issue with the optics - an ISKCON leader being seen to be acting in contravention with the explicit directives given by the GBC. Had Maharaja simply sat on the floor - not that I am suggesting that he should have (I am merely covering all possible eventualities) - I would not have objected or intervened. The optics of my offering him an asana was the issue.

As it happened, the tour then moved from Srila Prabhupada's darsana room to his bathroom and then bedroom. Then later the goshala.

I feel that the OP description implies that rudely and immediately after the Guru Puja, I ushered Maharaja to leave. Nothing could have been further from the truth - as the video footage reveals.

No one at Bhaktivedanta Manor determined when Maharaja would leave. This decision was taken by Maharaja and/or his entourage. We would have been happy for him to stay longer, taken prasada, etc.

Later that day, at Sivarama Maharaja's request, I went to the house in Radlett where Maharaja was staying or at least giving some program. Sivarama Maharaja - who was in Hungary at the time - had asked me to request Narayana Maharaja to send one of Sivarama Maharaja's disciples home to his family as his joining Narayana Maharaja's entourage was threatening to break up the family.

The very first thing that I did, when I was in Maharaja's presence, was beg his forgiveness if I had in any way offended him. The prospect of my offending him - even unintentionally - did not sit well with me. In my mind at the time, the only thing that might have possibly constituted an offense on my part was the withholding of the seat. And, perhaps, some internal discomfort about a couple of things that Maharaja had said in Srila Prabhupada's rooms that prompted me to think about bringing that part of the tour to a close.
