Gurudeva memories: Here are some life-saving bullet point gospel teachings which Gurudeva spoke to us in Mathura, India in 1995 - I am sharing these not so as I can be glorified, but to share the inspiration of these amazing words Gurudeva spoke to us from his lotus-like heart, so that I, and you, can again be inspired from deep within:-
1. "By mind, heart and all senses you should serve Hari Nam (Holy Names) with ALL that you have";
2. "Never cheat anyone, don't speak lie's, be so sweet in nature, tolerant, with no desire for honor, but giving all respect to all others";
3. Arup Siddha is not Bhakti, example - distributing books, making cow protection shelters, building temples, making Gurukula, these are not Bhakti, but they may be Bhakti when connected with offerings to Krishna (the Lord). If no deep connection with devotional practices, then you may have to be a cow in next birth. Distributing books, so many are doing, but not realizing what is inside the books, it will give some sukriti (spiritual bank account points) only, but it is not Bhakti (pure devotion to God)";
4. "Go inside, for one can be so very learned in so many services and knowledge, yet by these externals where are you in your Krishna consciousness? You should be really connected to Krishna at time of chanting. Go inside, all scriptures and Sadhu's tell us, this is the most important thing for our advancement";
5. "All knowledge comes from Him (God/Krishna), He is so beautiful He can attract everyone, anyone who see's Him will be charmed. He is full of sweetness. We should not think of God like He is "Lord of all Lords", "Creator of all Creators", then opulence mood will come in the heart and disturb, then pure Bhakti (love and devotion) cannot come. One must think of Krishna like beloved son, best friend, or most beloved lover "you are an ocean of mercy, I am so poor, so wretched and fallen, I am so stupid, and full of so much nonsense, how can I get Your mercy?"";
6. "Let go of the idea that "i'm so intelligent, I'm a Devotee, no one else is as good as me"";
7. "If we bow down to all, to all Holy places, then Krishna (God) can be conquered, but He cannot be conquered with pranam or dandavats only. Only by affection, feeling like He is my most beloved Person. Then Krishna will be conquered";
8. "We should not want any material thing for ourselves, no pleasures for the self whatsoever, give it up, offer all to Krishna for His pleasure alone";
9. "When at time of offering anything, don't think "I am offering this to You" or it will be rejected. In mind when offering, think "oh Gurudeva, please will you accept this beautiful offering, and take it to Radha (the Goddess), on my behalf, please forgive all my mistakes"";
10. "Krishna (God) will nourish me, He will save me. At time of chanting, we must be surrendered in the mind, or we can chant thousands of Names, yet nothing comes for so many years, and lifetimes. Chanting should be like offering your self, there must be mood attached to it, you should have some greed to follow like the Manjari's, no self interest. If there is not taste at time of chanting, then by force you should tell your mind to chant, by hook or by crook by force, tell your mind "I will not give you anything to eat if you have not chanted at least 16 rounds every morning". Chanting 22 rounds sitting in one place, again tell the mind "I will not give you even one drop of water to drink, unless you sit now and let me chant". Then Ruci (taste for chanting) will come. No idleness will come. Then offer your heart to Gurudeva, to Radha and Krishna with feeling, and cry. Four hours of chanting like this, and then you will see, this is Krishna consciousness. No one else should be controlled by me, only my mad mind should be controlled";

Bill Van Winkle Just came from Badger was in Gurudevas room with Nityananda watching a ceremony performed for my son in Vrndavan. On the way home a perfect full rainbow seemed to originate from Gurudevas room

Gurudeva memories: Gurudeva was so amazing, every word from his lotus mouth was like a soothing balm upon the aching fire in our hearts. Here, in 1995 in Mathura India, in one Darshan, Gurudeva shared with us eleven gospels of truth, for our ultimate benefit:
1. "We should try to know what is the aim and object of our life, how to cross over life and death. Krishna (God) is not our aim and object. Krishna Prema (Pure love for God) is our object, our aim is love, pure love for Godhead, if we have no Prema then we have no affection for Krishna (God), He may come right here before us, and we may behave like Kamsa (a wicked king)";
2. "When we understand and really know what the aim and object of our Sadhana (spiritual practice) is, then our real Bhajan (meditation) begins. If anyone takes the Holy Name (of God) and chants them sincerely, then at once, all sins go away, this is fact! If anyone is not chanting Pure Name, only shadow of Name, but with faith, then so many sinful acts will burn away. If one chants even one Name purely, then Prema will come. We should pray "please remove our sins" because Name is so powerful and we should have full faith on this, nothing and no one else can help us";
3. "Why do we do Artik and offering ghee lamps, can anyone say?", Gurudeva asked us. Everyone was silent. Then he so beautifully explained "In the evening time (in the Kingdom of God), Krishna, Balaram (the Lord's Brother) and all the cowherd boys are returning home from a days pleasure in the forests. All the Mothers are waiting for Krishna to come, He has so much dust on His lotus face, the night is coming and Mother Yasoda thinks to Herself, "I must wash Krishna", She takes the ghee lamp, as do all the Mothers, and together They do Artik with the ghee lamp, to see, "are there any scratches on His face or body, because they have no doubt been wrestling in the forest and playing hide and seek in tree's". Our worship should be done like this, very slowly, like looking for scratches, so you can soothe any scratches the Lord may have, so no scars may come. First the face, then the body three times, then whole body. Mother Yasoda is thinking "the boys are so naughty, They are fighting and running towards the groves in the forest" and then She is wiping Them with Her veil (Krishna and Balaram). The lamps should not be offered to others, nor other articles".
4. "By sprinkling water and touching the lamp we free ourselves of all evils";
5. "At time of worship, fan Them with a sweet mood, but do not offer to anyone else, do it lightly with thought of Krishna, always think whether it is summer or winter. In winter, no fanning is needed, it is cold, Krishna may get sick because He is so soft. If you feel cold, then you should not use a fan, it depends on the season. In winter we only offers flowers by hand, not garlands (because they are cold on the body). If anyone wants to really advance, they will have to learn these moods";
6. "If we want to really enter Vraj (Kingdom of God), single pointedly we must reject all things which prevent that mood. We can be respectful of Lord Siva, Lord Nrsinghadeva, Lord Jagannath Baladev Subhadra, Lord Narayana, Rukmini, be respectful, but don't worship. Because Radha (the Goddess) and Krishna (God) doesn't ever go out of Vrindavana (the Kingdom), the moods are different. We must advance, do not fear correction and instruction for advancement's sake";
7. "If we want to be in Vrindavan (the Kingdom), we should take the Holy Name, crying, offering our tears only, and eating very little, sleeping very little, because we are too busy chanting";
8. "Cheating is there when we or others have worldly desires. Cheating, due to envy. Envy cannot be there if there is no material desires";
9. "By Divine Love I have come to help you";
10. "By fearing death and sorrows, one offers ones self to Krishna (the Lord), it is the door, by doing so, this is salvation";
11. "If we are offending, from not giving respect to all, then we cannot get real salvation";

Gurudeva memories: Here I am sharing ten jewels of spiritual wisdom, like gospels, which I heard from my Holy Master / Gurudeva in 1996 in Mathura, India:-
1. "We are not this body, we are not mortal, the root and goal of our life is "I should serve Krishna (God)". We should think "when will that day come when I may go to Vrindavan (The Kingdom of God) and never have to return to this world of birth and death"";
2. "Even if we have thousands of golden houses, and thousands of grandchildren, and have more than any King still anyone is not satisfied";
3. "We should not be sectarian, we should follow inwardly not only outwardly";
4. "Do not ever dishonor anyone. If we criticize or gossip about any bad person we absorb their quality into our heart. If we criticize someone for being wretched or lusty, then it will enter our heart like a current, but if we always glorify the Vaisnava's (devotee's of God), Gurudeva (Holy Master) and Krishna (God) then their good qualities will enter our heart, so don't criticize anyone";
5. "The inward symptom of someone with real Sraddha (faith) is "even if someone comes and cuts me into thousands of pieces I will never leave my Bhakti (devotional practices)"".
6. "If we want Vrindavan (eternal life in Kingdom of God), to really enter, we must give up worldly ego, anger, lust, and be humble like a blade of grass, be tolerant like a tree, then we will be qualified to see Vrindavan (the Kingdom)";
7. "We should have faith, that gradually our seed (in the heart) will become sprouted, not in a day or two, we should have faith that in time, there will be a very good tree, with many very good fruits, matured and ripened and so sweet that a taste will come, but it will come at the accurate time";
8. "In this life I should have Bhakti (pure devotion to God), good association (friendships with those more advanced than us) and conquer my death";
9. "Without the mercy of Gurudeva, we cannot give up envy, lust, anger, hatred etc, even anger and ego we cannot give up. We cannot be humble by exercising our intelligence, we are helpless, but with mercy then we will have spiritual power that we can chant and have a seed of Bhakti (devotion) sprouting";
10. "Nam (Holy Names) is so merciful, whether qualified or not, Hari Nam is so generous, it can wash our hearts and then give us Prem (pure Love and devotion);

Gurudeva memories: Day four of sharing from my 1995-1996 Diaries of being with Gurudeva in Mathura, India and then traveling on his first tour. Here Gurudeva continues glorifying Swamiji (Srila Prabhupada): "I want to glorify Swamiji for doing this work in Western countries, in a very worn and torn condition without any platform, with no smell of Bhakti, no Krishna consciousness at all. But he mercifully gave the seed of Bhakti, and if this seed is given water properly and nourished then leaves will come, and eventually take the form of a good creeper, or a big tree, that crosses Heaven, Vaikuntha (eternal spiritual planets), Ayodhya, Dwarka, Mathura and then goes directly to Vrindavan (The Kingdom of God), to the lotus feet of Krishna (God) there.
1. It is very hard to give this seed to anyone, the heart is like a desert.
2. Too much attachment to this world is like a desert also;
3. Too much detachment is like a cold place, a place that is so cold that no sprouts can grow (in the heart);
4. A powerful seed can be given, and it cannot sprout, but Prabhupada has sown with fertile ground in a desert by his Hari Katha (spiritual discussions) and by his own practice of Bhakti;
5. If we are not practicing and establishing ourselves in Bhakti (devotion) we may do tens of thousands of "Haribol Haribol" (singing the Names of God) and no fruit will come;
6. All our disciplic lineage have ordered us to practice first ourselves, and then preach, Caitanya Mahaprabhu ordered us thus.
7. First practice in your own life, and then if you have realized something then talk to others, otherwise it is fruitless.
8. A parrot is chanting Hare Krishna (God's Holy Names), because his master has told him to do it, but if a cat comes and attacks him, he forgets everything and "caw caw caw" (Gurudeva simulating a parrot crowing). We should not be like this!
9. We are chanting, but what is the meaning of our chanting, we should realize this. If we take Hari Nam like a parrot, then we will not have anything.
10. Our line of succession has come to give this knowledge, of what is behind this kirtan, what is behind this chanting, you should try to know what is behind all that you do, this is real Bhakti.

Gurudeva memories: Day three of sharing from my 1995-1996 Diaries of being with Gurudeva in Mathura. I am sharing with you, fourteen jewels of precious instructions that he gave to us. Gurudeva was speaking very intimately and sweetly with a small group of us, teaching us how to live our lives whilst trying to reach for the highest goal (the Kingdom of God - Vrindavan). Here Gurudeva addresses the situation with the followers of Srila Prabhupada and ISKCON, and so beautifully he explains his mission to us.
1. "Happiness has no object, happiness and Ananda (spiritual bliss) are very different. Ananda has an object, Krishna (God) is that object. In happiness of Krishna consciousness, this is Ananda (bliss), real happiness. Happiness for tasting anything for the self, you should all stay away from this, it looks like the same, but it is not the same.
2. Do not dishonor even one Devotee who has once taken the Holy Name.
3. Gurudeva may tell sometimes something so directly, that only bonafide devotees who are serving their Holy Master very deeply and directly can follow, otherwise for life after life they will be in class, hearing something, yet give up all these things to enjoy separately from Krishna (God).
4. Our lives should always be with the current of Bhakti, and if a dam is made there to be separate from the flow of Bhakti, they will die, so we should connect to the current, like from our Guru Parampara. If we want to make controls and make so many rules and regulations, then Bhakti will be stopped, checked. Bhakti doesn't want any rules or regulations, Her regulation is affection and love. By control everything will be destroyed, Bhakti should not be controlled, it should be allowed to flow up to Divine Krishna and Divine Srimati Radhika (Radha - The Goddess).
5. We should protect our Bhakti from bad waters, (bad association), they should be checked only.
6. We should not try to control our Guru Acharya's, we should not try to control anyone.
7. I have not come to make any group consciousness, I have come to help, to make the devotees go straight to Goloka Vrindavan (the Kingdom of God).
8. Anyone can serve Gurudeva, even a dog, if serving, even a little bit, I am so indebted to them.
9. Problems are coming, crisis is coming because we have forgotten Krishna (God), we should try to serve Him in all respect.
10. If anyone is chanting to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Radha and Krishna, and has a little faith in Swamiji (Srila Prabhupada), or any Vaisnava, they should be honored.
11. If you want divine love, you should certainly follow, don't go for fame, or gather up disciples, not if you want Divine Love.
12. Srila Prabhupada (Swamiji) repeatedly requested me to accompany him everywhere, I told him "but after some time I will help you in your mission, my Holy Master (Sannyasa Guru of Srila Prabhupada - Srila Bhakti Prajnana Keshava Goswami Maharaja) is here in Mathura, and I am still serving him". Only now I am able to go to all these countries. Satya-Sankalpa means - what a pure devotee thinks must come true, or what he tells will always be truth. That is why now, by his grace (Srila Prabhupada's), and of my Holy Master, and Sri Yugala (Divine Couple) I am now able to go to all these countries. In such a short time Swamiji (Srila Prabhupada) did SO much mission, so I want to take his lotus dust where he has been, and help all those who have left, who have lost faith in this path. They should not fear each other, Swamiji has ordered me to come, so I will come to give some energy. I don't know why they fear me, in all the Epics, those who chant Hare Krishna like Hari Das Thakur, they have no fear, because the Atma (soul) is immortal, if Krishna is our goal then they should understand and have no fear.
13. In this world, there is no bosom friend, no father or mother like me to ISKCON, whether they respect me or not, I have full affection for them, like a father or mother, like Guru. I have only come to follow what Swamiji (Srila Prabhupada) has ordered me, whether they like it or not. Whether the child wants to take medicine or not, the father must give. Whether they realize this or not, I am realizing. They should change, and really realize this fact. Any Vaisnava on the level of Madhyam-Adhikari cannot envy or have anger towards anyone, so we can see who are bonfide devotees or not. I have not come to create any problems or quarrel with anyone, I have come only to help them, all should combine and serve Srila Prabhupada, and I pray there will be success in this mood. Some are thinking I am going in a separate way, but our mission, our line is the same. It is the fault of devotee's who are not understanding properly.
14. Try to develop your Divine Love, otherwise you cannot enter Vrindavan (The Kingdom of God).

Cyavana Swami Thank you for posting. "I am asking you to take a new heart and try to cooperate with each other there. There is always some difference because we are not impersonalists, we are personalists and everyone is different. However we have our standard so everything must be conducted on the basis of Krsna Consciousness as I have taught it."

Gurudeva memories: Day two of sharing from my 1995-1996 Diaries of being with Gurudeva. Here Gurudeva, in Mathura, was talking to a small group of devotee's in a Darshan. He was sitting outside his room on the 1st Floor of the Keshavji Gaudiya Math temple, on a simple straw woven bench, with his legs crossed yoga style, with one foot resting up upon his other leg, he was energetic and full of love and affection for us all. There was a small group of faithful devotee's sitting close to him on the floor, eagerly awaiting instruction. Here Gurudeva so beautifully began to explain our truthful and honest situation in life, and how to overcome. I am going to list them as individual teachings here, to give the full force of the teaching.
1. "If lust and anger have gone away, but hypocrisy is there, one must then give up hypocrisy."
2. "The wicked mind, is like an ass taking bath in urine and all dirty things, take bath instead in Hari Katha (hearing the stories of Krishna/God), which is like the sweetest nectar."
3. "If you want to do Bhajan, and do seva (service) to Radha & Krishna (God and Goddess), then stay away from luxury.
4. "Don't serve rich men, persons addicted to sense gratification (selfish), mayavadi's, atheists or film stars".
5. "Don't try to collect too much wealth, take nothing for your self. Take only the Holy Name."
6. "Don't make arguments, Krishna is true, His words are true, the soul is true, all else is false."
7. "Give up the desire for fame and attention, it is very hard to give up. Gurudeva can see where it is hiding, it is the root of all evils."
8. "If you connect with Krishna, then your pride will go away."
9. "People are trying to decorate Vrindavan, but you should try to make your hearts Vrindavan, develop the moods of the Goswami's."
10. "Don't think yourself to be a qualified Vaisnava or you will fall down. A bonafide Guru will never say "I am bonafide", he will be humble and respect all."
11. "Ladies should be separate from men, don't talk alone with girls if you are Brahmachari or Sannyasi, don't joke around with girls".
12. "Don't flatter people for money, or glorify them "oh you are such a good devotee".
13. "Your whole life should not be full of plans to make money, it is not right, we should try to chant Hare Krishna with tears".
14. "Don't talk chitter chatter or make idle gossip"
15. "We are all in Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's family, so ALL should be respected and those who are higher, hear Hari Katha from them and advance like this."

Gurudeva memories: I will begin to share now, some extracts of the most beautiful teachings of my Gurudeva, from within my Diaries from 1995-1996. "There are two kinds of affection in this world. One pure, and one impure. Love which wants any gain is not pure, like selfish people who are so lusty, they only want to love any beautiful lady to enjoy for some time and then give them up, this is not love, nor is it pure. If there is a tree which has many fruits and it is green, many birds will come, if no fruit and leaves are there due to dryness no birds will come. A lusty person will say "you are my life and soul", but when lust has been temporarily fulfilled they will no long be interested. We should try to learn what is pure love (Prema Bhakti), for this is the goal of our life. There is a tree, and upon this tree sits two birds. One bird is eating the ripe sweet fruits on the tree branch, the other is sitting on the branch quietly and very still. The bird eating the fruits is so busy eating and enjoying that it doesn't notice there is another bird on the branch also. One day this bird looks up for a second from it's pleasure to see a beautiful bird is also sharing the same branch as itself, and from that day on, this bird is changed forever. Our soul is that bird, and Krishna (God) is the other Bird waiting to be seen. In this world, all souls are not successful, because they do not serve God, they only serve themselves. They hear something inspiring, but no action happens. Also action is needed. Krishna (God) is the root of all, but there is no root of Krishna. He is the supporter and is the strengthening of all souls, and in that Jiva (soul) there is a particle of pure love waiting to be awakened. Take nothing of this world for your self, if you take too much you will be smashed, your heart should be soft and simple, and go on like this".

Gurudeva memories: One example of our earthly situation Gurudeva loved to use over and over again, was the example of a person in a well. There is a person in a dark deep well, he/she is hanging onto a rope with both hands, beneath them is a long dark tunnel leading to death, if they let go of the rope they know they will fall and die, so they are holding on very tight, with all their strength. After some time they are feeling weary, then one drop of nectar comes from above, and drops into their mouth, and they feel soothed and happy and they think to themselves "oh it's not so bad in here", then another drop comes, and another, and soon there are drops of nectar coming once in a while, to refresh the person holding onto this rope. This person is now thinking, "this place is really not so bad, this nectar is very sweet and refreshing, it gives me strength to hold on when I become tired and weary". Gurudeva said this is our situation, we are hanging onto life by a thread, none of us know when death will come, we are not even guaranteed to grow old and die with family surrounding us, for death when it comes surprises us all. The drops of nectar are material pleasures, they come here and there, and give us JUST enough pleasure that we think we're alright and having an okay time of it. Gurudeva then explained the rope is our connection to Gurudeva, to holy teachings and to chanting/praying. We actually have the ability to climb up out of the well, but we have become complacent because of a few drops of honey dropping into our mouths. If we hold the rope tight, we can climb higher and higher with our strength, and eventually leave the well entirely, and forever. Eternal life awaits, in a colorful beautiful magical forest, where every thing and every one is fully conscious, every tree is wish fulfilling, every moment is ever increasing ecstasy, every word a song, every step a dance, every meeting as if it's the first time you are meeting your Lover, no death, no old age, no disease, no suffering... this is the Kingdom of God that Jesus came to tell us about, that every Saint and Prophet in History told us is the goal of our meditation, of our lives. The well is a dark and dangerous place, for it holds no permanence, all of our relationships are destined to end in suffering, for death and separation will come to us all, and our pleasures are few. I'm not saying we should not strive to be happy, and grateful for what we have here on earth, quite the contrary, we should indeed be grateful for every second of life we are offered, for at any moment it can be taken from any one of us. Indeed a perilous situation for us all. The Kingdom of God is within us, it is our birthright, to take some time every day for ourselves, to close our eyes from this world, even but for a few moments each day, and meditate quietly, upon the eternal life that thrives within us. Gurudeva gave so many examples like this, but this one was my favorite.
